Music

This major prepares you for a career in music as a teacher, a performer or for a variety of related fields in the music industry. You might also elect graduate study in the areas of performance, theory, music education and musicology. The music education major focuses on skills needed in today?s schools and emphasizes the music educator?s role in the broader aspects of the educational process. A music minor is also offered.

Major skills acquired:

Students entering any of the emphases within MUSIC are required to audition prior to admittance. These students come to the music major with experience during their high school years in ensembles and applied study. Many also enter the program with previous study in music theory. These areas will continue to be developed and expanded upon by the college curriculum:
Ensemble Participation and Performance
Knowledge of Music Form and Arranging
Knowledge of Music History and Literature
Knowledge of Music Theory and Aural Skills
Musical Analysis
Performance skills in Primary Area (piano, vocal or instrumental)
Some programs will also include study in the following:
Conducting
Literature of a given performance area
Pedagogy of a given performance area

Music (BA) is designed for those students who wish to have a very flexible program. It includes a required minor in another area of study. The minor may come from a completely different discipline or may be in a related area, such as Arts Management. Students completing this emphasis often enter fields such as music business (including retail sales), arts management, instrumental design, music publishing, producing and marketing of music software, and private studio music teaching.

Music Educational Instrumental (BM) is designed for those who seek a teaching license for elementary, middle school and high school band or orchestra.

Music Education Choral (BM) is designed for those who seek a teaching license for middle and high school choral music.

Music Education General (BM) is designed for those who seek a teaching license to work with elementary or middle school students in a classroom setting, or high school students in non-ensemble settings (Music Appreciation, Music Technology, Music Theory).

Music Performance (BM) is designed for those students preparing for a career in performance, private teaching, or graduate study in music performance.

Music History/Theory (BM) is designed for those who are preparing to enter graduate school in music history, music theory, or composition.
