Occupational Safety

The Occupational Safety program prepares students for rewarding careers protecting America's workforce, the public and the natural environment from harm in today's age of rapid technological and scientific development. The Environmental Safety & Health (ESH) professional is concerned with the interaction between people and the physical, chemical, biological and psychological factors which affect their safety, health and productivity. Coursework covers a wide range of subjects including ergonomics, accident prevention, security, and environmental protection. The students are provided with essential skills that enable them to recognize, devise and implement methods to control hazards. In addition, students are provided with a number of practical work site experiences, culminating in a full semester internship with a practicing EHS professional.

Occupational Safety:
Assist companies in the implementation and management of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
Assist management and health/medical staff in issues related to hiring, retention, injury and other employee issues
Assist organizations to comply with federal, state, and local environmental safety and health standards
Design and implement accident and injury prevention programs
Design and implement safety and health training programs including the identification of hazards, safe use of equipment, emergency responses, etc.
Evaluate safety and health risks and propose effective solutions
Inspect and identify unsafe and unhealthy work conditions
Investigate accidents and analyze safety and health data
Manage environmental safety and health programs
Traffic Safety: Teach classroom and behind the wheel aspects of driver education

Career Guide to the Safety Profession

NOTE: Students who are thinking of an Occupational Safety major should take as many chemistry, statistics and computer science courses as possible to be in the best competitive position for placement. Students who are selecting teaching as a career should consider driver education licensure to broaden their employment opportunities, as well as a possible source of additional income during the school year and in the summer.
