GENERAL EDUCATION requirements include a personal health and fitness course for all entering students. Additional opportunities exist for an in-depth study of health-related physical fitness and/or participation in team, individual, and high risk adventure sports as leisure-time activities at a beginning or intermediate level. Courses offered are available to all students and promote a knowledge of sports and activities which stress the importance of the benefits derived from regular participation in physical activity.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAJOR/MINOR programs provide opportunities supporting both licensure to teach in the public schools and preparation for careers outside the public schools in health, physical education, recreation and coaching. There are three physical education major programs: (1) is a 54-credit major and includes course work leading to a broadfield (K-12) public school licensure, (2) is a K-9 elementary 35-credit major, requiring a minor, and also prepares one to work in the public schools, and (3) is a 35-credit non-licensure sub-major also requiring a minor and prepares one to work in the private sector. The four minor programs include health, physical education, recreation/leisure studies, and coaching.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR SPECIAL STUDENT LICENSURE provides a 15-credit 860 certification in adapted physical education.

RECREATION/LEISURE STUDIES MINOR/EMPHASIS

The recreation and leisure service profession is interdisciplinary in nature requiring educational training both of a general and specialized nature. Many of the areas of specialization fall within the realm of business, education, sociology, social welfare, psychology, physical education, public administration, communications, geography, theatre, art, and music. It is for this reason that the minor is an interdisciplinary minor which is designed to enhance the student's major area of professional preparation and expand their employment opportunities to include related recreation and leisure fields of employment.

COACHING

Because of the imbalance between trained coaches and the number needed in school systems, you may wish to combine this training with your academic areas. UW-Whitewater offers students as future coaches this opportunity.

The minor in coaching is designed primarily for elementary/middle and middle/secondary education majors and provides professional preparation for the coaching of interscholastic athletics. Students in other major areas of study can readily acquire this minor.
