Rock, Pop and Beyond Music Clinic

Express yourself in this fun and musical environment! This is a weeklong day summer camp where kids learn to sing/play rock and pop music and delve into the fundamentals of songwriting, arranging with musical software and musical collaboration.

Activities each day include:

  • Singing songs, including rock, pop and folk
  • Learn fundamentals of playing Ukulele and Rock Band instruments (guitar, keyboard, drums and bass)
  • Songwriting History of Rock, Pop and Beyond
  • Rock or Pop Band practice

There will be a live performance at the end of the week for families and friends, so don't forget to bring your cameras to record the new rock/pop stars! Rock, Pop and Beyond Camp runs from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and is designed for boys and girls ages 8-14. We provide snack and all necessary instruments. If a student already plays an instrument, then they are welcome to bring it.  This event is available to boys and girls entering grades 3 - 8th in Fall 2019.

  • Session One: July 15 - 19, 2019; 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Session Two: July 22 - 26, 2019; 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Fees Include

The event fee includes instruction, t-shirt and insurance.

Refunds

All registrant accounts must be paid in full three weeks (21 days) prior to the start of event. Registrants with outstanding balances after payment is due in full are subject to being removed from the event roster without refund. Please contact Continuing Education Services at cesevents@uww.edu prior to this deadline if extenuating circumstances prevent you from completing a payment.

In the event of a cancellation, Continuing Education Services should be notified no later than 21 days before the start of the event session in order to receive a refund, less 20% administrative fee. Cancellation request received less than 21 days from the start of camp will receive a refund minus 50% late cancellation fee of event cost. Cancellations due to medical reasons will receive a full refund, less the 20% administrative fee, if the cancellation is requested and medical documentation is provided prior to the start of event. Valid medical cancellations must include a signed letter from a licensed physician to qualify. NO REFUNDS will be given for withdrawal due to early departures, disciplinary reasons or no show after the event has started.

All cancellation requests must be submitted to cesevents@uww.edu; provide registrant’s name, camp and medical documentation, if applicable. Refunds will be returned to name an address of payer.

We reserve the right to cancel any event due to low enrollment; in such as case, all fees paid will be refunded.

You can sponsor a registrant and cover all or partial fees. We have received requests in the past from schools, companies, organizations, friends and family members that would like to send their chosen registrant to a specific event. Pre-camp information will be available on this website three weeks prior to the start of event. Pre-camp information includes check-in and out times with locations, confirmed daily schedule, what to bring and other important information you will need to know before attending this event. If any medical information changes, it is your responsibility to notify Continuing Education Services at cesevent@uww.edu.

Summer Event Rules

UW-Whitewater at Rock County will hold all registrants responsible for their conduct. Serious misconduct or disruption will lead to immediate dismissal from event. Registrants dismissed from the event will not receive a refund. Review Summer Event Rules for more details.

Parking

Free parking is available in campus lots except in areas reserved for faculty and staff as well as on the streets near the campus. Parking on campus is regulated by the Rock County Sheriff’s Department.

9:00 - 9:20 a.m. Morning meeting for all campers
9:30 - 10:00 a.m. Getting to know you.  Morning Yoga. Karate.
10:15 - 11:00 a.m.         Breathing exercises. Vocal warm-ups. Singing songs
Camp divided into groups:
11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Instruments:
  • Ukulele
  • Drums
  • Keyboard Guitar/Bass Guitar (4th graders or older)
12:15 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch Break
1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Creativity zone. Songwriting
Camp divided into groups.  Each group will participate in rotation of every class below:
2:00 - 3:10 p.m.
  • History of Rock, Pop and Beyond OR Music Software class
  • Rock band OR Pop "Top 40" Band
3:20 - 4:30 p.m.
  • History of Rock, Pop and Beyond OR Music Software class

Friday: Schedule

9:00 - 9:45 a.m. Meeting!  Morning Yoga. Breathing exercises and Vocal warm-up
10:00 - 10:45 a.m. Rehearsing songs for concert.
11:00 - 12:00 p.m.         Instruments. Rehearsing instrumental peices for concert.
12:15 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch Break
1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Preparing Posters.  Live music engineering and stage setup.  Band Practice.
2:00 - 2:45 p.m. Preparing posters. Sound check. Band Practice.
3:00 - 3:45 p.m. Dress rehearsal.
4:00 p.m. Final Concert

Alena Holmes, Director

Alena Holmes

Dr. Alena Holmes is an Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Education at UW-Whitewater. An active researcher, clinician musician, and pedagogue, Holmes has given over 60 presentations in United States and in Russia, Malaysia, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Ireland and Scotland and has authored dozens of journal articles and book chapter on music education. In addition to her research and teaching, Alena Holmes is a singer and songwriter performing in educational, professional, and community contexts throughout US.
