Dr. Ozgul Kartal is assistant professor of mathematics education at UW-Whitewater in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to her appointment at UW- Whitewater, Dr. Kartal taught mathematics at K-12 schools for more than seven years. She has been teaching a variety of mathematics and mathematics education courses for pre-service and in-service teachers for seven years. Her research interests include teaching and learning of mathematics for students who are not traditionally successful, problem solving and mathematical modeling, and implementation of effective mathematics teaching practices. She has several national and international presentations/publications on the teaching and learning of mathematics. She also supervises elementary, middle, and high school student teachers.
K-8 Math Summit
The inaugural UW-Whitewater K-8 Math Summit is designed to meet the needs of elementary and middle school educators who teach mathematics, serve as a math interventionist, and/or coach teachers of mathematics. Both teachers and administrators are encouraged to attend. Having a group from your school or district makes it easier to capture the learning of this workshop and be able to bring it back and scale it up in your school or district. Participants will be grouped by grade band: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 throughout the sessions to best facilitate discussions and learning pertinent to the level that you teach and/or support.
This full day of professional development will provide opportunities to learn from UW-Whitewater faculty, both curriculum and instruction and math content specialists, as well as network and learn collaboratively with other K-8 educators. The K-8 Math Summit is being facilitated by Dr. Ozgul Kartal, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction; Wade Tillett, associate professor of curriculum and instruction; and Rachel Chaphalkar, assistant professor of mathematics. Each session is designed to meet educators where they are at with their mathematical understanding and current teaching strategies. Whether you are in your first year teaching or you have extensive teaching experience, mathematics educators of all levels will walk away from each session with a deeper understanding of mathematical practices and an enhanced ability to implement research-based teaching practices in your classroom. Every participant will participate in each of the three sessions:
- Engaging in, implementing, and assessing Standards for Mathematical Practices
- Teaching mathematics for a growth mindset through Low Floor and High Ceiling Tasks
- Visual Math: Mathematical problem solving with manipulatives

Refunds

All registrant accounts must be paid in full three weeks (21 days) prior to the start of event. Registrants with outstanding balances after payment is due in full are subject to being removed from the event roster without refund. Please contact Continuing Education Services at cesevents@uww.edu prior to this deadline if extenuating circumstances prevent you from completing a payment.
We reserve the right to cancel any event due to low enrollment; in such a case, all fees paid will be refunded.

Engaging in, implementing, and assessing Standards for Mathematical Practices
The eight CCSSM standards for mathematical practices with a focus on make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, and use appropriate tools strategically will be unpacked and interpreted in ways that are useful for practice through sample instructional activities. The participants will explore the use of standards for mathematical practices in engaging students with mathematical content within the structure of a three-part lesson format (launch-explore-summarize); and analyze assessment items in connection to the standards for mathematical practices.
Teaching mathematics for a growth mindset through Low Floor and High Ceiling Tasks
Moving from fixed mindset math tasks to growth mindset math tasks, with a space within them to learn, will be explored. A variety of strategies that can work to open mathematics tasks and increase students’ potential for learning will be discussed with a focus on Low Floor and High Ceiling Tasks. The participants will be engaged in and analyze Low Floor and High Ceiling Tasks, which are accessible to a wide range of students and extend to high levels while allowing all students an entry point. They will learn and practice strategies for making a task lower floor and higher ceiling for more and deeper student learning opportunities.
Visual Math: Mathematical problem solving with manipulatives
The participants will explore the use of visual representations as a way to deepen their students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures and as tools for problem solving; and they will examine the connections among mathematical representations.

Parking

Dr. Ozgul Kartal
Dr. Rachel Chaphalkar
Dr. Rachel Chaphalkar is assistant professor of mathematics education at UW-Whitewater in the Department of Mathematics. She has been teaching mathematics and statistics courses for elementary and secondary teachers for the past 8 years. Her research interests include students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics and statistics and the effect of growth mindset interventions for calculus students.
Wade Tillett
Wade Tillett is an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he instructs Math and STEM teaching methods courses for various levels serving Early Childhood through High School. He also has experience as a middle school math teacher in Chicago Public Schools and as a licensed architect.
