Note:
This year we will HEAVILY emphasizing participation by H.S. biology teachers and preservice (future) H.S. biology teachers.

Expectations for All BEST-TERP Participants

  1. Expect to work ~ 40 hours/week in a research laboratory or field laboratory for 8 weeks (Week of June 12 through week of August 4).
  2. Develop research skills appropriate to the specialty you are selected for.
  3. Work on 2 writing assignments over the summer:
    1. Team written proposal of the work for the summer (due week 3)
    2. Final report as an individual writing assignment (due week 8)
  4. Participate in 2 presentations over the summer:
    1. Present proposals week 3-4 as part of a research team.
    2. Poster presentation on week 8.
  5. Earn 1-10 college credits for participation in BEST-TERP.

Specific to High School Teacher Participants

  1. 1-10 credits toward an advanced degree.
  2. Pay for 8 weeks work=$400/week ($3200 for summer).

The summer TERP experience for teachers is designed to provide a immersin experience in doing science as a scientist. There are weekly group meetings with mentors and participants that are designed to assist HS teachers with varous aspects of integrating science experinces in the classroom. These include discussion about scientific padogody, evolution, logistics of using experimental labratory activities in the classroom, as well as reflection on the role of investigation in the science classroom. What we hope to provide is experience doing science, which should influence how you and your students experience scince in the future.


Specific to Undergraduate participants:

  1. 1-6 credits toward degree.
  2. Pay for 8 weeks work=$325/week ($2600 for summer).

Expectations of Undergraduate participants:

  1. Active participation in research projects. While most laboratories will have flexibility in work schedules, this program is a 40 hour/week work commitment.
