What: Capoeira Demonstration by the Madison-based school Raices do Brasil

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that fuses self-defense, dance, music and acrobatics.  It was born centuries ago as a form of self-liberation for African slaves against their Portuguese slave masters and as such, it had to be disguised through music and dance so as not to reveal its true martial nature. Today it is widely practiced in Brazil and across the globe whereever there is a love for African heritage, tropical drumming, and liberating movement.
