Services Provided: Hospice is both a philosophy and a service. Death and dying are viewed not as a defeat, but as a natural part of life. And because death has to happen, Hospice allows it to happen with maximum respect for each person's inherent worth and with reverence for the process. Hospice care is provided through an interdisciplinary team including the patient, family members, physicians, nurses, social workers, nursing assistants, volunteers, chaplains and bereavement counselors. Our mission statement is to provide comfort, care and meaning at life's end. Our focus is on symptom management with consideration given to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the dying person and their family. Hospice services can be provided in the patient's home, assisted living, nursing home or hospital setting.

Summary of Expected Responsibilities and Learning Outcomes of Student Interns: The student will become familiar with the philosophy of hospice and be able to perform the necessary interventions to complete the admission process including knowledge of MC/MA/private insurance, have an increased comfort level in talking with patients & families about death and dying; knowledge of how to explain and complete Advanced Directives, participate in interdisciplinary team meetings for anticipatory planning of patient needs, have exposure to the roles of each team member and begin to learn ways of providing support to those in grief.
