Summary of Expected Responsibilities and Learning Outcomes of Student Interns:

Mission: The YWCA empowers women to create a world of peace, racial justice, dignity, freedom and equality for all.

Definition: The Student Intern works under the supervision of the Program Coordinator. The student will be given opportunities to first observe staff interaction with residents and then to perform tasks related to the normal activities at the shelter. The intern is expected to inform her/his field supervisor as well as the Program Coordinator of any concerns, issues, conflicts, questions, relevant information, etc.

Qualifications: To be involved in an educational program relevant to the role which the intern is undertaking, as well as knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault. Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication, stress/time management, and effective problem-solving techniques. Ability to prioritize and organize time and work, work independently, set goals and follow tasks to completion, and function in a crisis setting. A positive attitude, dependability and flexibility are essential. Must possess ability to work in collaboration with philosophically and culturally diverse populations and underserved populations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Direct Services:

  • Facilitate support groups, as requested
  • Assist Child/Youth Advocate in planning and carrying out age-appropriate activities, support groups, respite care, crisis management, etc. as requested
  • Assist in providing services to shelter residents and program participants
  • Assist with case management responsibilities as requested
  • Attend community meetings as requested

Shelter Responsibilities:

  • Stay up-to-date on readings, shelter status, issues, policies, etc. which the Program Coordinator shares with you. Arrive on time for scheduled appointments and shifts
  • So long as the location of the shelter is confidential, maintain that confidentiality
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the identity of residents, past and present
  • Share in shelter responsibilities which include answering crisis and business phone lines. Record appropriate information in logs
  • Attend weekly staff meetings as schedule allows
  • Provide written communication regarding daily shelter activities
  • Treat all people with respect and maintain a safe environment
  • Immediately report suspected or witnessed abuse to the Program Coordinator and assist with appropriate follow-through as requested
  • Assist with general up-keep of resident areas of shelter, making appropriate requests for assistance

Miscellaneous:

  • Promote non-judgmental, non-violent shelter atmosphere
  • Provide statistical data collection in a timely and accurate basis as requested by the Program Coordinator
  • Prepare communications/reports as requested by the Program Coordinator
  • Work as a team member
  • Attend training sessions and Association meetings as requested
  • Be familiar with YWCA Goals and Objectives, Board policies, and YWCA procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
