Research interests involve several areas, all united by a theme of involving undergraduates, high school teachers, and high school students in the scientific process and research. Current work is on the neurobiology of the nematode, Ascaris lumbricoides, looking at how small neuropeptides are used by neurons to communicate, specifically on the gene structure and expression of these peptides in various cells. This work includes cloning and sequencing the genes for the neuropeptides and a histochemical study of the neurons involved, i.e. where the peptides are found. Other work examines the anatomy of the animal and how the structure of the pseudocoelome is related to the function of the nervous system. The work involves injecting dyes into the pseudocoelome and seeing how they spread. In an unrelated project, a study of the genetics of trout populations in Yellowstone National Park is being organized, looking at the cladistics (relationships) of the trout at the DNA level, in cooperation with undergraduate students and secondary school science teachers. The work involves collecting samples in the field and doing polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of the DNA in the lab, and is part of a Natural History of Yellowstone Natural Park Field Course.
