Research: Students in Professor Kumpaty’s group gain broad experience in Synthetic Organic Chemistry research. Her research interests include Enantiospecific synthesis of Biologically active molecules, Electroactive molecules for Self-Assembled studies, Reductive Amination reactions and Microwave-induced organic reactions. Her lab provides valuable experience in synthetic organic chemical research where students will learn the techniques of reaction set-up, execution, work-up and purification and identification of products. Over the ten years she has been at Whitewater she has trained 15+ students in undergraduate research and their work has resulted in over 30 presentations at national and international meetings. Two projects are currently underway which includes the design, syntheses and biological evaluation of novel series of active -carbolines in search of selective ligands for 1-containing GABAA/benzodiazepine receptor (gamma-aminobutyric acid A/BzR) subtypes which are targeted to treat Alcoholism and Anxiety disorders in humans. We are collaborating with Prof. Jim Cook at UW-Milwaukee on this project. Besides synthesis, a combination of spectroscopy techniques, 1D and 2D NMR, IR, mass spectrometry will be employed to characterize the molecules providing plenty of hands-on experience on major instrumentation.
