Academic Interests and Service: While serving as chair of the Department of Languages and Literatures from 2001-2008, most of my non-administrative energies have gone into two areas: planning conferences and working to support the national LEAP initiative. In the last six years I have helped to plan, with Jeff McKinnon in Biology, annual campus Earth Day conferences and also initiated the first state conference for university English teachers (fall 2006 in Madison).
My work for LEAP (Liberal Education and America's Promise) is to help promote liberal education in higher education. To that end, I organized a town/gown forum, supported a state-wide student writing award for essays about liberal education, and recently organized a session on "History Across the Curriculum" as a conference of the American Association of Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C. I am currently working to organize a UW-System conference (fall 2008) supporting liberal education. Next year, 2008-2009, I will be taking a sabbatical to work as a public scholar to advance the LEAP initiative.
