Research is an essential part of the learning experience at the College of Letters & Sciences. The quality of our faculty mentors and commitment to undergraduate research funding has earned us a national reputation.

Regardless of your major, you'll have many scholarly and creative opportunities to apply your knowledge in ways that make a difference, to explore issues that concern you, and to discover new passions. You'll also be able to present your work at our annual undergraduate research day held in the spring, as well as at conferences and meetings throughout the country.

You'll work alongside a faculty mentor and some of the most highly respected scholars in their fields. Our commitment to undergraduate research doesn't stop there, however.

Undergraduate Research Grants

Undergraduate research grants provide funding for a project that is designed by the student, fits the student's academic and/or career plans, and results in a paper, creative performance, visual art object, or academic project that can be presented to a professional/peer audience and/or published in a scholarly publication. Students must submit a proposal for consideration.

Travel Research Grants

Travel research grants provide support for students to travel with a faculty mentor to a regional, national, or international meeting to make a research presentation (either oral or poster).

Honors Thesis Incentive Grants

These grants provide funding for the development of more Honors students in our academic programs. Projects include a research thesis or a similar capstone project that will lead to conference presentations, publications, or other creative works appropriate to the field.

In recent years, students and faculty within the College have investigated such topics as the cell death machinery of pancreatic tumor cells, the prevalence of leptospirosis among local dogs, calibrating a neutrino detector in the ice of the Antarctic, and infrared images in the area surrounding the galactic center.
