Science Alliance
ENVISION Magazine, 2004

All ideas great or small begin somewhere, and the Science Alliance is no exception. Born out of a conversation between professor Marc Anderson’67, chair of the water chemistry department at UW-Madison, and Kate Loftus, director of Advancement for the College of Letters and Sciences, the Science Alliance is still evolving.

According to professor Bruce Eshelman, chair of the UWWhitewater biological sciences department, “The Science Alliance’s mission is layered. The group will work to advise faculty on curriculum selection to meet the ever-changing demands of science industries and medical schools. We will look for the Alliance to act as role models for current and future students, serve as “lobbyists” for the sciences on campus, as well as offering assistance and suggestions for Upham Hall development efforts.”

Anderson and Loftus brainstormed about ways he could “help” his alma mater. Professor Anderson thought that working with the chemistry department in an advisory capacity would be useful. After conversations with emeritus faculty members Jack Cummings, Jim Grothey and Dan Sable, and many current faculty department chairs, the Science Alliance was born.

The Science Alliance is planning its first annual meeting this fall. In addition to Anderson, the 30 member alliance includes: Patrick O. Slane’77, astrophysicist, Harvard Smithsonian; Kurt Krummel’96, PhD., researcher, Salk Institute; David Lang’73, president, Lang Dental Manufacturing Co., Inc.; Tom Hei’76, professor, Radiation and Oncology, Environmental Health, Center for Radiological Research, Columbia University, and a long list of successful alumni from varied professions in science and business.
