Internship filled with international intrigue
ENVISION Magazine, 2006
When Joe Hoff ’05 applied for a fall-semester internship with the State Department in February 2004, he had serious doubts that anything would come of it. But Hoff ’s application so impressed the State Department that he was offered a position beginning October 2004 with the Regional Security Offi ce at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, Belgium.
Hoff said the highlight of his internship was meeting former Secretary of State Colin Powell during Powell’s farewell visit to Belgium in December 2004. “As an intern I had the enviable task of meeting the luggage of the secretary’s entourage and helping to escort it to the hotel so nothing could be tampered with. I was also lucky to join three other interns back at the embassy for a meet-and-greet.”
Hoff returned to UW-Whitewater in spring 2005 and served another internship with Judge Robert Kennedy in Walworth County. He graduated cum laude in May 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a paralegal certifi cation. – Melissa DiMotto
