Pre-professional programs
ENVISION Magazine, 2004
Attorney Paul Jones'93 can trace his interest in law back to classroom debates with his Whitewater High School civic teacher who sparked a lifelong fascination with government and politics. When it came time to decide on a college, Jones chose UW‑Whitewater based on the strength of the political science department, its faculty and the pre-law program.
"I am convinced that the liberal arts education I received," said Jones, "with its diverse disciplines and analytical principles, was the best preparation for law school."
After completing his undergraduate degree at UW‑Whitewater, Jones attended law school at Georgetown University graduating cum laude in 1997. He is now practicing corporate law with Foley & Lardner Attorneys at Law in Milwaukee.
Many students entering as freshmen are unaware of the numerous pre-professional programs that launch careers like Jones's. Available through the College of Letters and Science, pre-law is one of nine such programs. The others include: chiropractic, dentistry, engineering, medicine, cytotechnology, optometry, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine.
Most students will complete a bachelor of science or arts degree before applying for admission to a professional school. A faculty advisor from each pre-professional program who is familiar with the requirements is available to help individuals develop an overall plan. – Jane Provorse
