Ryan Kohlmeyer

Ryan Kohlmeyer
Chemistry (B.S.), Spring 2007.

Kohlmeyer, a New Berlin native, graduated from UWW majoring in Chemistry in three years – no small feat considering the rigors of the program. However, apart his busy course work, he also did research with Dr. Catherine Chan, an assistant professor in the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry. With the support of UWW Undergraduate Research Program, Kohlmeyer traveled to California to present his research in the spring of 2007. He also received a Wenaas Scholarship, named for the late Chemistry professor Paul Wenaas, designed to honor students excelling in Chemistry.

The scholarship helped Kohlmeyer a lot by significantly reducing the size of his school debt. Kohlmeyer is now a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is working under the supervision of Dr. Jian Chen, and is researching on organic synthesis, smart nanostructures, and carbon nanotubes.

These are all ‘hot’ areas of research, the results of which may have important applications such as providing an alternative energy source.
