Graduate Overview

Master of Science in Business Education

Three emphases are available in MS Business Education program. The General emphasis is designed for teachers who already hold a license and wish to pursue a graduate degree or additional licensure. The Secondary emphasis leads to Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensure in Business Education (250); additional licenses possible are Marketing Education (285) and Vocational Business Education (281).  The Post-Secondary emphasis includes courses which meet the Wisconsin Technical College instructor certification requirements.   

Master of Science - Business or Marketing Education (General)

Required Core

  • ITBE 762 - Curriculum Issues and Design for Business & Marketing Education Su Only (3 cr.) (Prerequisite ITBE 500)
  • ITBE 660 - Principles of Career and Technical Education F (online) and Su Only (2 cr.)
  • ITBE 500 Introduction to Business & Marketing Education F Only (3 cr.)

Additional Requirements

  • ITBE 661 Organization, Administration & Coordination of Cooperative Education Programs S Only (3 cr.)
  • EDFOUND 780 Techniques of Assessment & Research or EDFOUND 740 Techniques of Research Sp, F, Occ. Su (3 cr.)
  • Select 22 units (12 must be 700+) from College of Business and Economics or College of Education offerings in consultation with advisor

Additional Requirements for Marketing Education (285 license)

  • 15 credits of Marketing, Management, or Entrepreneurship courses beyond a Principles of Marketing class
  • SECNDED 440 Methods of Marketing Education
  • CIFLD 793 (3 credits) Practicum/Field Study/Student Teaching Prereq: Graduate status, application and interview, completion of 9 credits at UW-Whitewater, and designated curriculum check sheet requirements (Not to be used for first-time certification). Must include introductory and advanced marketing classes, coordination of cooperative program, working with a student organization, and if possible working with a school lab/store.
  • Completion of Phase 4 portfolio in conjunction with field study
  • Pass Praxis 2 content exam in Marketing
  • 4,000 hours of work experience in marketing or related field

Total Program:

30 Credits with written exam
30-36 Credits with thesis
36 Credits (no thesis/no written exam)

  • Maximum of previously completed & transfer credits = 12 credits at UWW and 9 transfer credits
  • Maximum workshop, special studies; and individual studies credits = 9 (limited to 6 credits in special studies' limited to 4 credits in individual studies)
  • Minimum credits at 700 level or above = 50 percent
  • Seven years to complete degree from term of first course (one extension request of up to two years may be granted by the department)

In addition to the content courses, 4,000 work hours in sales, retailing, or marketing-related occupations are required. Student teaching may occur during the same time period for those students also seeking DPI 250 Licensure.
