Admission to the College of Business and Economics

You may apply for admission to the College of Business and Economics at a Registration Information Meeting prior to registering for your first upper division business courses.  If you are admitted during the semester prior to starting the upper division courses, the admission is tentative. You must still be admissable at the end of the semester in order to remain in upper division courses and in your intended major.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & ECONOMICS?

Admission to the College of Business and Economics upper division level requires that a student meet the following criteria:

  • Have 54 or more projected credits.  Projected credits are the number of credits that will be earned at the end of the present term.
  • Have finished or be registering for the last courses in the following areas:
    • Communication skills (ENGLISH 101, ENGLISH 102, & SPEECH 110)
    • Unique (MATH 143, ECON 201, & ECON 202)
    • Lower division requirements [ACCOUNT 244, ACCOUNT 249/341/342, ECON 245, & ITBE 280 (effective fall 2007 incoming freshmen)]
  • Passed the Computer Applications Test (CAT).
  • Have earned a combined cumulative (transfer and UW-W) grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.8.

If you do not meet the 2.80 requirement, there is an alternative admission standard which is based on your performance in the proficiency, unique, and lower division courses which may be used.

All of these criteria are effective at the end of the semester in which an application is submitted.  If any one of these are found to be lacking at the end-of-semester review, admission to the upper division will be rescinded.  Students are admitted to the upper division on a temporary basis for registration purposes; admission is not final until the end-of-semester review.

8 POINT FORMULA ADMISSION

Students who do not meet the 2.8 gpa requirement may be admitted based on an "8 Point" formula.  This formula considers the cumulative combined gpa and the gpa earned in the following ten courses:

Communication Skills

Unique

Lower Division

ENGLISH 101 English

MATH 143 Finite

ACCOUNT 244 Intro Financial Actg.

ENGLISH 102 English

ECON 201 Micro

ACCOUNT 249/341/342

SPEECH 110 Speech

ECON 202 Macro

ECON 245 Business Statistics

*ITBE 280 Intro Info Systems

*Required for fall 2007 incoming freshmen, & fall 2008 transfer students.

The computation is:  (2 x combined gpa) + gpa in these 10 courses =                .  If the result is 8 or more, the student will be admitted.  This computation is not done until the end of the semester in which the student applies.

Pre-Business students may repeat for "No Credit," a maximum of three Business and Economics classes in which grades of "C" were earned to meet this 8 Point criterion.  The new grade will not replace the "C," but will be used by the College to determine eligibility for admission.  It will not raise the official combined gpa.  Athletes, veterans, and students receiving financial aid who use this repeat option should check if their eligibility would be affected.
