Electives/Diversity
Electives. Everyone has room for electives in their program. However, you should be careful about taking too many electives--the number of elective credits is not large. An "elective" is virtually any course which you would like to take which is not a requirement. Students choose electives for different reasons:
-
The course(s) complement their major. Suggestions: communication, leadership, courses that help understand other cultures, foreign languages, safety (management majors), math, etc. The course is known for being relatively easy. Grade point average boosters.
-
An intense interest in the field: history, literature, sciences, political science, etc.
Students are allowed to count 12 credits of economics as non-business courses. ECON 201 Microeconomics, ECON 202 Macroeconomics, and ECON 245 Business Statistics account for 9 of the 12 units. You may take an additional economics course (after admission to the College) and count it as a non-business elective.
Diversity. Diversity requirement is a university requirement. Everyone must complete a 3-unit diversity course in order to graduate. The diversity courses are usually listed separately in the schedule of classes to help you understand which courses count as diversity. Some diversity courses are also University degree requirements courses. If you have not not met the 32 unit minimum in University degree requirements, you can fulfill two requirements with one course.
COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT
All business majors are required to complete 20 hours of community service prior to graduation. The criteria for determining whether the work you do counts as community service include:
-
You do not get paid.
-
You do the work for a non-profit entity.
-
You make an effort to help a community that is above and beyond your personal responsibilities. Visiting your grandmother doesn't count. Visiting a nursing home through a program does count. Participating in an organization through meeting attendance does not count.
-
Participating in an activity sponsored by the organization to benefit a community does count.
Community service must be documented. You may either complete a form which is available online Community Service Form, or Carlson 4035 or have a letter sent to the Assistant Dean which gives the following details:
-
The name of the organization
-
The number of hours worked
-
A description of the work performed
-
The dates the work was performed
-
A contact person for the organization who can verify the information
-
The contact person's telephone number and signature
Send or bring the information to the Assistant Dean's Office in Carlson 4035. If you're not certain that the service you perform will count as community service, contact the Assistant Dean's Office at 472-5588.
