What inspired you to pursue a major in the College of Business and Economics?
Business was the natural choice. I didn't think I could last through a 10 year med school program, I didn't have the patience for science, and engineering sounded scary. On the other hand, I had always loved numbers – not the crazy kind like in calculus or physics, but simple arithmetic. As nerdy as it sounds, it was a favorite exercise to find patterns in random number sequences and predicting the next one. And so, Financial Planning (although I still don't fully know what it is) pulled at me. Add to that that my father is a businessman, I settled on Finance and, just for fun, threw in Accounting.
What are your short term and long term plans after graduation?
I haven't really decided completely. Currently I am choosing between applying for law school and scouting job opportunities. I would like to pursue grad school, mainly because I'm too scared to think of a life in the "real world," but also because I genuinely enjoy learning new things. In addition, although I have learned so much outside the classroom at UW-Whitewater, I would like to get the experience of a bigger campus also – something I feel I missed out on by coming to Whitewater. In the long term, I plan to enter the suit-tie world where I can "show the world what I got." I find the corporate life to energizing and engaging, and that holds a special thrill I would like to experience.
What is something special you have found out about Hyland Hall?
First, I'd compliment the architectural design of the building. The hallways and classrooms are naturally lit – I've rarely noticed artificial lighting. The sheer size of the atrium and the auditoriums is awesome. It doesn't feel like a smaller campus any more. Stepping into the building feels like stepping into a different world. One thing I noticed is that the study rooms are built to actually be study rooms – contrast that with the University Center, where the common areas are meant for socializing. I wouldn't normally notice the difference, but the way it's built, it isn't hard to distinguish.
What do you like most about UW-W?
My favorite thing about UW-W is the professor to student ratio. In all but 2-3 classes of my five semesters here, I have felt completely comfortable asking questions in class. Secondly, I love all the construction. It's nice to know that our campus is not just growing, but developing. The new dorm suites are the latest excitement, and Hyland Hall hasn't even completely sunk in yet. The other thing I enjoy about Whitewater is the diversity of the student organizations. I don't think the number of organizations is anything amazing, but there is so much diversity! Social, academic, musical, athletic, and anything else you can think of...Whitewater has it all.
What do you enjoy most about your classes?
I would never have expected it, but the level of competence, confidence, and experience of ALL my professors is commendable. It is one thing to be knowledgeable of a subject, but to be able to understand and reply to questions in class is the trait of a good teacher. This not only speaks well for the faculty, but also for the hiring staff at the University. I also like that none of UW-Whitewater classes are taught by TAs.
