Why did you choose to come to UW-Whitewater?
After my first visit to UW-W, I knew this was the perfect school for me. I immediately felt comfortable walking around the campus, even though it was larger, it didn't feel scary like other campuses I had visited. Whitewater is also far enough from home, but close enough at the same time. Most importantly, I was interested in pursuing a degree in business and the College of Business and Economics at UW-Whitewater is very reputable.
What inspired you to pursue a major in the College of Business and Economics?
I started taking business classes in my junior year of high school, as well as participating in FBLA. I became interested in several different areas which led me to pursuing a degree in pre-business. Once I learned about the reputation of COBE and seeing the opportunities through the organizations, classes and other activities it had to offer- I knew a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration would be the best match for me.
What do you miss most about your hometown?
The thing that I miss the most is my family and my friends. But if the situation were reversed, there are many more things I would miss about Whitewater. After living here for three years, I have grown quite attached to the great friends I've made, living on my own, and all of the activities happening on this campus.
What tips would you give a high school senior planning on applying to UW-Whitewater as a pre-business major?
Stay on top of everything; it's difficult to catch up once you've fallen behind. Get involved in business clubs at your high school, such as DECA and FBLA. Both do a great job in preparing you for business settings. Develop good study habits early and learn to organize your time. Having a new social life and personal freedoms is very exciting and can get in the way of homework and studying. As soon as you've mastered those two skills, your transition into the college classroom will be much smoother.
What is something special you have found out about Hyland Hall?
The new business building is outstanding. It has more of a corporate atmosphere to it, rather than an academic feel which helps prepare you for the business world. When you walk in the atrium, you don't feel as though you are in a building full of classrooms. Besides the outstanding architecture and design, another great thing is that there are Hi-Tech Team Study Rooms that have a smart board and a projector to use to develop class presentations. It is the perfect area to create presentations and practice them. There are several collaborative learning areas that encourage the use of groups and teamwork, which is very important for a career in business. In the classroom I am gaining knowledge and skills in areas that I will be able to apply in a job setting. The student orgs, career fairs, seminars and guest speakers are also very essential to attend because of the learning and networking opportunities.
What do you like most about UW-W?
The campus is beautiful, but on the larger side. However, everything is located close enough that you won't ever have to walk more than fifteen minutes anywhere. Banks, grocery stores, Wal-Mart and fast food restaurants are also conveniently located in the small city of Whitewater. Incoming students shouldn't be turned away by the small size of the city. There are always plenty of activities to do on and off campus.
