Community Service
All business majors are required to complete 20 hours of community service prior to graduation. The criteria for determining whether the work you do counts as community service include:
- You do not get paid.
- You do the work for a non-profit entity.
- You make an effort to help a community that is above and beyond your personal responsibilities. Visiting your grandmother doesn't count. Visiting a nursing home through a program does count. Participating in an organization through meeting attendance does not count.
- Participating in an activity sponsored by the organization to benefit a community does count.
Community service must be documented. You may either complete a form which is available online (click here for the Community Service Form), in Hyland Hall 4300, or have a letter sent to the Assistant Dean which gives the following details:
- The name of the organization
- The number of hours worked
- A description of the work performed
- The dates the work was performed
- A contact person for the organization who can verify the information
- The contact person's telephone number and signature
Send or bring the information to the Assistant Dean's Office in Hyland Hall 4300. If you are not certain that the service you perform will count as community service, contact the Assistant Dean's Office at 472-4900.
