Lieutenant Colonel Brian P. Wolhaupter
Professor of Military Science
Brian P. Wolhaupter, LTC, FA

Lt. Col. Brian P. Wolhaupter is the Professor of Military Science for the Warhawk Battalion at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. He is responsible for the UW-Whitewater ROTC program’s mission performance, and development and recruitment of future officers for the US Army.

Lt. Col. Wolhaupter graduated from Forest Lake High School, Forest Lake MN, in 1985. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History from St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN and a Master’s of Business Administration in Military Management from TOURO University International. Lt. Col. Wolhaupter’s military education includes the Field Artillery Officer’s Basic Course and Advanced Course, the U.S. Army Combined Arms Services Staff School, the Human Resource Manager’s Qualification Course and, he is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Lt. Col. Wolhaupter received his commission in 1989 through the ROTC program at St. John’s University. His previous assignments include Company Fire Support Officer, Battery Direction Officer, Platoon Leader and Battalion Fire Support Officer with the 1-11th Field Artillery at Ft. Lewis, WA. He also served as a Officer Basic Course Gunnery Instructor at the US Army Field Artillery School and as a Battalion Fire Direction Officer with the 2-4th FA at Ft. Sill, OK completing seven and a half years in the Regular Army. Lt. Col. Wolhaupter entered Army National Guard in Kansas where he served as the Battalion Fire Direction Officer for the 1-127th FA. After relocating to Wisconsin he served in the 1-126th FA as the Battalion Operations Officer and the HHB Commander. At the 57th FA Brigade he served as the Liaison Officer, the Operations Officer and the Brigade S1. Upon assignment to the 1-121st Field Artillery Lt. Col. Wolhaupter served as the Battalion S3 and the Battalion Executive Officer prior to assuming command of the 1-121st FA battalion while the unit was deployed in to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Lt. Col. Wolhaupter completed his commands 1st Battalion, 121st Field Artillery, Wisconsin Army National in August of 2009 and is currently assigned as the Professor of Military Science for the Army ROTC program at UW-Whitewater. Lt. Col Wolhaupter is an Active Guard and Reserve officer with the Wisconsin Army National Guard.

Lt. Col. Wolhaupter’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with silver oak leave cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with star device, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device, the Army Parachutist Badge, and the Combat Action Badge.

Lt. Col. Wolhaupter lives in Watertown, WI with his wife Cathy and two children.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Nyenhuis
Assistant Professor of Military Science

LTC Nyenhuis graduated from UW-Whitewater in 1987 and received a commission as an Engineer Officer in the US Army Reserve. Upon completion of Engineer Officer Basic, he was assigned as a Horizontal Construction Platoon Leader in the 961st Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Heavy) in Pewaukee, WI. LTC Nyenhuis served in several positions in the 961st Engineers including Vertical Construction Platoon Leader, Company Commander, Battalion Plans Officer, Intelligence Officer and Adjutant. After leaving the 961st Engineer Battalion, LTC Nyenhuis was assigned to the US Army Facility Engineer Group, 416th Theater Engineer Command in Ft. McCoy, WI.

He deployed with a Facility Engineer Team in March 2001 in support of NATO peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, serving as the Operations Officer of the Task Force Falcon Directorate of Public Works. In 2003 LTC Nyenhuis deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Project Engineer for 3rd US Army. LTC Nyenhuis has participated in several overseas construction missions including operations in Honduras, Germany, Egypt, South Korea, Belize and the South Pacific. LTC Nyenhuis’s military schools include the Engineer Officer Basic Course, the Engineer Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School and The Army Intermediate Leader Education Course. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (2), the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal (Expeditionary), Global War on Terrorism Medal (Service), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2), the Army Service Ribbon, the Reserve Forces Overseas Training Ribbon (6) and the Kosovo NATO Service Medal.

LTC Nyenhuis is married to Jill and they have two children, Kayla and Colin.

CPT Peter Buchholz
Standing Assistant Professor of Military Science

CPT Peter C. Buchholz is a 1993 graduate of Texas Tech University and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Political Science. He enlisted into the Army Reserves in 1991 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 2001.  CPT Buchholz has held numerous leadership positions including Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Company Commander.

CPT Buchholz served with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment for 16 months during Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Al Anbar Province at Ar Ramadi, Fallujah, Al Taqaddum Airbase and Al Asad (Qadisiyah) Airbase as well as Camp Doha and Arifjan, Kuwait. His stateside duty includes Ft Lee, Ft Bliss and Ft. Irwin and additional overseas duty in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

CPT Buchholz’s awards include: Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal (second award), Army Achievement Medal (fourth award), Army Reserves Achievement Medal (fifth award), National Defense Service Medal (third award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with M device), Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge.

CPT Buchholz is a native of Wisconsin and returned to live in the state after 25 years in Texas.  He is the proud parent of a German Shorthaired Pointer and a grey Tabby.

Master Sergeant Shawn C. Simmons

Master Sergeant Shawn C. Simmons is a second generation Field Artillery NCO, born at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 27th, 1984, and attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as a Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Master Sergeant Simmons retired on 1 Sep 2008 after 24 years service in the Army. Master Sergeant Simmons has completed his BS in Accounting from Upper Iowa University. He has been married for 11 years and has 2 children, and his hobbies include playing hockey, hunting, outdoor activities and spending time with his family.

He has served in numerous leadership positions including Senior Military Science Instructor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Gunner, Howitzer Section Chief, and Platoon Sergeant. He is presently serving as Military Science Instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

His stateside assignments include 1-27 Field Artillery (1985-1986) and 5-29 Field Artillery (1991-1995) at Fort Carson, Colorado, 1-377 Field Artillery Regiment (AASLT) (1996-2000), and 1(ABN)-321 Field Artillery Regiment (2000-2001) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His overseas assignments include 2-11 Field Artillery (1995), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and two tours in Germany: First in 1-36 Field Artillery Regiment (1988-1990), Augsburg, Germany, 3-1 Field Artillery (1990-1991) Bamberg, Germany, and most recently with 4-27 Field Artillery in Baumholder, Germany.

His deployments include 8 months in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, 6 months in Pristina, Kosovo, as a member of the NATO Headquarters for KFOR, and 15 months in Baghdad and North Babil Province in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has also participated in Hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina and Wild-land firefighting in Montana.

MSG Simmons is a graduate of the Primary Leadership Course (PLDC), the Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNCOC), and the Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course (ANCOC). MSG Simmons is also a graduate of the Airborne, Air Assault, and Rappel Master courses. His Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards) , Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (seven awards), Army Achievement Medal (eight awards), Good Conduct Medal (seven awards), National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Humanitarian Service Medal (three awards), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/ numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon (w/ numeral 3). He is also the recipient of the Combat Action Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Venezuelan Parachutist Badge.

Sergeant First Class David C. Shono

Sergeant First Class David C. Shono is a second generation Infantry NCO. He enlisted 20 Aug. 1992, and attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as an Infantryman at Ft. Benning, Ga.
He has served in numerous leadership positions including Team Leader, Squad Leader, Weapons Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, and Patrol Leader. He is presently serving as an Army National Guard Officer Recruiter and Military Science Instructor at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, U.S. Army ROTC.

His stateside assignments include 4-325 Airborne Infantry Regiment (1993-1998) at Ft. Bragg, NC, 2/127th INF Mech. (1998-2000) at Hartford, WI, 2/128th INF (2000-2003) at Oconomowoc, WI, 1/128th INF (2004-2005) at Menomonee, WI, Recruiting and Retention Officer Strength Force (2006-Present) at UW-Whitewater, WI.

His deployments include 6 months in Sinai, Egypt in support of the Multinational Forces and Observers, and 12 months in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

SFC Shono is a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC), the Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNCOC). SFC Shono is also a graduate of the Airborne School, Ranger School, and the Recruiting Career Counselor Badge. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal (two awards), Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Ribbon (with 'M' device), Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/ numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (w/ numeral 2), Army Reserve Component Achievement Award (three awards), Superior Unit Award, and The Recruiting Bar. SFC Shono is also a recipient of the Expert Infantryman's Badge, Combat Infantryman's Badge and the British Parachutist Wings.

Major Barron
Military Science Instructor

Major April J. Barron was born and raised in Des Plaines, Illinois. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1994 receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Nutritional Sciences/Dietetics and a minor in Social Gerontology. MAJ Barron earned a Master of Science in Dietetics from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee in 2003. She is currently employed by Purity Dialysis Centers as a Registered Dietitian.

Military Experience: MAJ Barron enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1989, and became a member of the 44th General Hospital in Madison. As an enlisted soldier, she received training as a 91Q (Pharmacy Specialist). In 1997 she received a Direct Commission in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Registered Dietitian.

As an officer, her assignments have included working as a Hospital Dietitian for both the 4221st U.S. Army Hospital in Madison and the 452d Combat Support Hospital in Milwaukee. She also served as a Company Executive Officer and the Battalion S-4 (Logistics Officer) for 3-334, 2nd BDE, 84th DIV (IT) in Milwaukee. She is currently assigned to 8th BDE SROTC, 84th DIV (IT), in Milwaukee, and she is attached to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a Military Science Instructor.

Barbara Klietz
Military Science Secretary

Barb started working at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a LTC (Limited Term Employee) in November of 1978.  She was permanently hired by the University on July 16, 1979 in the office of Student Organizations.  She then took the State exam for job promotion and started interviewing for jobs in that classification.  Barb was selected for the secretarial job in the Department of Military Science and started working in ROTC on September 22, 1980.

Barbs father served in World War II and grew up during the Vietnam War/Era which ties her to the military. 

Barb was born and raised in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.  Her maiden name is Behlke.  Barb comes from a family of seven siblings; she has two older brothers, two younger brothers and had two younger sisters.  Barb used to be married to Dan McKee; they have two children, Trevor and Tiffany, and three grand children, Trista, Brianna and Tegan. She is now married to Jim Klietz.
