UW-Whitewater to hold Summer Institute for educators Aug. 5-6
Teachers want to help their students succeed in the classroom. One way to do this is through a Response to Intervention program. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s 2009 Summer Institute will give participants a better understanding of how Response to Intervention programs can benefit students.
The Summer Institute will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 5-6, in Room 275A and B of the James R. Connor University Center. This three-part professional development program is for teachers, school administrators, school psychologists and counselors, as well as related service providers and parents of students with disabilities. Sessions include large group lecture, problem solving, hands-on activities, practical planning for participants' schools and a question and answer session.
"Schools are required to implement an RtI program, yet most educators are unfamiliar with how to go about progress monitoring and implementing research based instruction for students struggling in the general education curriculum," said Amy Griffith, an associate professor of special education at UW-Whitewater.
Claudia Rinaldi, an assistant professor of education at Boston College and former UW-Whitewater professor, will be the keynote speaker. Rinaldi is currently doing research in the Boston school system on the Response to Intervention programs she helped implement. Griffith says Rinaldi's hands-on experience with Response to Intervention implementation will be a great asset to those attending the institute. The schools that Rinaldi has worked with were featured as exemplary schools to tour during the 2008 National Council for Exceptional Children Conference.
The institute is $200. Course credit for graduates and undergraduates is also available. Attending the Summer Institute for credit opens the option of participating in a pre-institute and post-institute. The pre-institute, held Aug. 3-4, combines in-class discussion with Web enhancement. The post-institute, held Aug. 7-8, will focus on site-based collaborative actions to improve practices within schools and will include online instruction.
