Background and Interests

I was born and raised near Oakland, CA. After graduating from high school and floundering at Chabot College for two years, I joined the Coast Guard where I was a radioman. I spent quite a bit of time on a new concept of using computers for telecommunications. I suspect this is my beginning of my interest in computers, especially as it relates to distance education.

I went on to attend UW-Milwaukee where I graduated with my bachelors in speech-language pathology and audiology in 1974. After obtaining my masters from Ohio University in 1976 I worked in Beckley, WV in both a clinical setting and as an educational audiologist for RESA 1.

On to Vanderbilt University, where I obtained my Ph.D. in 1984 and worked from 1983 to 1993 at Minot (ND) State University. I am currently employed by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where I am the audiology coordinator and graduate coordinator.

I am very interested in trying to determine the most effective use of technology in the university setting, especially as it applies to distance education. I also have a strong interest in occupational hearing conservation and educational audiology. Current obsessions include the use of Flash and iPods in the classroom setting, as well as using computer based real time audio and video for distance education.
