Questions Commonly Asked by Students:
Q: "Does driving time count toward the total number of hours for student teaching?"
A: Driving time (to the site and back) does not count in the hours for student teaching. The only exception is during student teaching in a Birth to Three setting when the cooperating teacher and the student teacher are driving to placements together. It is assumed that during those times, the student teacher and cooperating teacher are discussing work related issues.
Q: "What courses can I take out of sequence (in the summer or at another university) to lighten my credit load during the academic year?"
A: At this time, the only course that students can take out of sequence is Medical Aspects of Disabilities. This course is offered every other summer during a six-week session.
Q: "Will I really be ready to student teach my third semester in the program?"
A: The amount of coursework specific to working with infants and toddlers that students have completed before entering into their third semester in this program is the same as the "old" early childhood special education program. We feel that the students are ready and would not place students in the field without adequate theoretical and fieldwork preparation.
Q: "Why can't all of the placements be closer to Whitewater?"
A: The faculty in this program believes that diversity of experiences are essential and the level of diversity that we want students to have cannot be obtained within close proximity of Whitewater.
Q: "Which classes are 'graded' and which classes are 'satisfactory/no credit'?"
A: All classes are "graded" including the Reflective Seminars. All fieldwork and student teaching experiences are graded except for the full semester in the public schools, which is "satisfactory/no credit."
Q: "When will I find out where I am placed for student teaching?"
A: Every attempt is made to let students know as quickly as possible where they will be placed for student teaching. Students must keep in mind that there are numerous programs within the College of Education; and the placement of student teachers is beyond just the involvement of the faculty within this program.
Q: "I need to have a student teaching close to my hometown so I can live with my family. Can I be guaranteed a placement close to my home town – even though I understand that I can't be placed in my home town?"
A: No one is guaranteed anything about placements except that she/he will get a placement that meets the requirements of the given experience (Birth to Three, preschool, etc.). It is very unlikely that students will be placed in their hometowns, even if the towns are large with multiple schools.
Q: "I am interested in going abroad for a semester – can I do my student teaching in another country?"
A: We believe that studying abroad is an opportunity that all students should take advantage of, however, because of the way that this program is designed; we cannot allow students to student teach abroad (taking the place of one of the student teaching experiences that we have developed). Students can study abroad during winterim or during the summer. Any field-based experiences abroad are in addition to required student teaching placements.
Q: "Do I have to make up time if I am absent from student teaching?"
A: -Student teachers in Directed Teaching A and B must make up all absences. The student teacher should inform the university supervisor of all absences and it is the student teacher's responsibility to make arrangements with the cooperating teacher to make up any missed time.
-If a student teacher in Directed Teaching C or D misses two or more days in one of the nine week experiences, a conference will be held between the university supervisor, the cooperating teacher and the student teacher to determine if the student teacher will need to make up the missed time in order to pass the directed teaching experience.
