Environmental Plan Assignment

Draw a floor plan of the classroom.  Place in it all immovable objects such as heating units, sinks, doors, windows, etc.  Add all moveable furniture such as learning centers, cabinets, shelves, tables, chairs, etc.  Graph paper may help with this. (¼ inch grid, ¼ inch equals 1 foot is recommended).  If this is not large enough, feel free to use another format.

Write a concise one or two page report in which the following questions are answered.

• What are some positive elements of the present design?
• What are some areas that could be improved and why?
• What changes would you make if this were your classroom.

Ideally, the floorplan and the write-up should be shared with the cooperating teacher.  This may open up discussion and assist the student teacher in understanding the current layout while also allowing the cooperating teacher to see the design through the student teacher’s perspective.
