Program Information:
This is a student teaching internship starting spring semester 2011. This internship is for all teacher education major students to complete eight weeks of directed teaching at Shanghai Far East School in Shanghai, China. A program agreement between Shanghai Far East School and the College of Education is set up so that teacher education major students can conduct her/his student teaching as internship at the bi-lingual K-12 School for eight weeks.

Program Duration:
Fall Term: Participants will student teach in Shanghai for eight to ten weeks beginning September 1st. In the end, students will return to Wisconsin to complete their student teaching assignment.
Spring Term: Participants will student teach in Shanghai for eight to ten weeks beginning the middle of March. In early May, students will return to Wisconsin to complete their student teaching assignment.

Program Application Deadlines:
The deadlines for students to notify Cheryl Wegner that they plan to student teach abroad are:
- February 1st (those who are planning to student teach the following fall)
- Setember 15th (those who are planning to student teach the following spring)
The deadlines for students to turn in the Permission to Student Teach Abroad form to Cheryl Wegner are:
- February 15th (those who are planning to student teach the following fall semester)
- October 1st (those who are planning to student teach the following spring semester)
Student Teaching Assignment & Placement:
Student teacher placement typically occurs at the same grade level/subject area as the Wisconsin assignment. Placements are available at the K-12. Contact the Program Faculty Advisor for more information about the placement process.
Student Teacher Supervision:
UW-W faculty members or adjunct staff will visit and observe student teachers at the Shanghai school.
Program Course Registration and Enrollment:
UW-W College of Education: CIGENRL 470 Student Teaching Seminar
Program participants will study China Education as well as gain knowledge and insight to China culture and history. The seminar will meet approximately once per month, including a preliminary meeting and a follow-up session after the abroad portion of the student teaching experience has concluded.
Student teachers will complete at lease one curricular project linking their China students with their students in Wisconsin to promote cultural awareness. Examples from past participants include: email exchanges, a friendship quilt, scrapbooks, and a "traveling bear" journal.
Criminal Background Checks:
Program participants are required to complete a criminal Background Check as part of the Program application process. Participants must present the original Criminal Background Report to Shanghai Far East School officials upon arrival in Shanghai; a copy of the Criminal Background Report will be sent to Shanghai Far East School during the program application process.
Passport and Visas:
A valid U.S. passport is required in order to participate in this student teaching program. Currently, a visa for China is required and you may apply at the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Chicago. Housing/Meals:
Shanghai Far East School will provide complimentary housing and meals as part of the internship.
Estimated Program Cost:
The total cost for Program participants is estimated to be $2,000. This estimated cost includes roundtrip airfare from Chicago to Shanghai, phone charges, internet access, insurances, etc. For more detailed cost information, contact Dr. Guoli Liang.
Shanghai Far East School will provide ¥1,000 every four weeks for student teachers in good standing.

Travel Arrangements:
We suggest that students travel in pairs or to China with another student teacher. There is a non-stop daily flight from Chicago to Shanghai. The airfare varies because of season and how advance to purchase the roundtrip airline tickets. Usually summer time and Chinese New Year are high demand seasons. Van Galder provides bus service from Janesville to O'Hare.
Shanghai Far East School will provide free transportation for UW-W student teachers to/from the Shanghai airport to the living site and departure from China.
