Program Information:

This is a student teaching internship starting spring semester 2011. This internship is for secondary teacher education major students to complete eight weeks of directed teaching at this top secondary school in China: Chongqing Nankai Middle School (6-12 grades) in Chongqing, China. Chongqing is the largest city in china. A program agreement between Chongqing Nankai Middle School and the College of Education is set up so that teacher education major students can conduct the student teaching as internship at this top 10 school in China for eight weeks.

Program Duration:

Fall Term: Participants will student teach in Chongqing for eight to ten weeks beginning September 1st. Students will return to Wisconsin to complete their student teaching assignment.
Spring Term: Participants will student teach in Chongqing for eight to ten weeks beginning the middle of March. Students will return to Wisconsin to complete their student teaching assignment.

  1. 1. Obtain a Student Teaching Abroad Application Form from Winther Hall, Room 2036. Follow the instructions exactly as noted on the form!
  2. 2. Schedule an appointment with the Program Faculty Advisor.

  4. 4. Schedule a pre-departure orientation meeting with the UW-W Center for Global Education, Tel. 262-472-5757.

Program Application Deadlines:

The deadlines for students to notify Cheryl Wegner that they plan to student teach abroad are:

  1. - February 1st (those who are planning to student teach the following fall)
  2. - September 15th (those who are planning to student teach the following spring)

The deadlines for students to submit the Student Teaching Abroad Application form to Cheryl Wegner are:

  1. - February 15th (those who are planning to student teach the following semester)
  2. - October 1st (those who are planning to student teach the following spring semester)

Student Teaching Assignment & Placement:

Student teacher placement typically occurs at the same grade level/subject area as the Wisconsin assignment. Placements are available at the K-12. Contact the Program Faculty Advisor for more information about the placement process.

Student Teacher Supervision:

UW-W faculty members or adjunct staff will visit and observe student teachers at this school in Chongqing.

Program Course Registration and Enrollment:

UW-W College of Education: CIGENRL 470 Student Teaching Seminar
Program participants will study China Education as well as gain knowledge and insight to China culture and history. The seminar will meet approximately once permonth, including a preliminary meeting and a follow-up session after the abroad portion of the student teaching experience has concluded.

Student teachers will complete at least one curricular project linking their China students with their students in Wisconsin to promote cultural awareness. Examples from past participants include: email exchanges, a friendship quilt, scrapbooks, and a traveling bear journal.

Criminal Background Checks:

Program participants are required to complete a criminal Background Check as part of the Program application process. Participants must present the original Criminal Background Report to Chongqing Nankai Middle School officials upon arrival in Chongqing; a copy of the Criminal Background Report will be sent to Chongqing Nankai Middle School during the program application process.

Passport and Visas:

A valid U.S. passport is required in order to participate in this student teaching program. Currently, a China visa is required and you may apply at the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago. Housing/Meals:

Chongqing Nankai Middle School will provide complimentary housing and a meal plan as part of the internship.

Estimated Program Cost:

The total cost for Program participants is estimated to be $2000. This estimated cost includes roundtrip airfare from Chicago to chongqing, phone charges, internet access, insurances, etc. For more detailed cost information, contact Dr. Guoli Liang.

Travel Arrangements:

We suggest that students travel to China in pairs or to China with another student teacher. There is a non-stop daily flight from Chicago to Beijing or Shanghai. Then you may fly to Chongqing. The airfare varies depending on the season and how far in advance the round trip airline tickets are purchased. Usually, summertime and Chinese New Year are high demand seasons. Van Galder provides bus service from Janesville to O'Hare.

Chongqing Nankai Middle School will provide free transportation for UW-W student teachers to/from the Chongqing airport to the living/school site.
