Wisconsin in Scotland
Teacher Education Program of Study

Program Information:
The WIS Teacher Education Program is a study-abroad experience designed especially for elementary (MC/EA) and secondary education majors. Because of unique licensure requirements established by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, such experiences are difficult to fit into the various licensure programs. This program makes a study abroad experience a possibility for education majors by offering an entire semester of coursework on site in Dalkeith, including a 3-credit field experience in Scottish schools. An on-line option exists for elementary education majors, who have less “wiggle room” in their programs, to take a children’s literature course while in Scotland. All students will have the option of picking up content area coursework in their minor or K-12/secondary licensure area as available through the WIS program. On-line coursework from the home institution provides an additional option for K-12/secondary education majors.

General Academic Information:
The WIS Teacher Education Program will be offered in the Spring 2011 semester. Please contact your advisor to discuss how this course of study will fit into your program plan. In general, for elementary education majors, this program is equivalent to the field study semester; however, special care must be taken to consider all program requirements in the major and minor before committing to this program. Secondary education majors should take their content-area methods course(s) in Fall 2010, but wait until Spring 2011 to take SECNDED 466.
Travel Arrangements & Housing:
Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Book your flight into Edinburgh. Dalkeith is easily accessible from there by bus or taxi.
The WIS program is housed in Dalkeith Palace. Students will eat, sleep, and study in this centuries-old manor house surrounded by Dalkeith Country Park.
Program Cost:
The estimated cost for the WIS Teacher Education Program is $7500. This includes room and board (15 meals per week). Students are responsible for airfare and ground transportation to and from Dalkeith Palace, weekend meals, and other personal expenses.
