Message from the Dean

Dean of the College of EducationOn behalf of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater teaching and learning community, I welcome the visiting teams from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Our campus is proud of the fact that we have earned continuous accreditation by NCATE since its inception in 1954. Our education programs have been approved by DPI since the university was founded in 1868 as a Normal School. Both NCATE and DPI have been strong partners in our quest for excellence in teacher education.

Our campus has a strong tradition of innovation in teacher education. As the largest producer of newly certified teachers in the state, we acknowledge our responsibility to produce quality educators characterized by state and national standards. Our theme, "The Teacher as a Reflective Facilitator," provides a rich context for our work and forms the basis of our conceptual framework that emphasizes the duality of critical thinking and facilitation. Past reviews have provided us with valuable feedback that we have subsequently used for course and program improvement. The result has been improved student learning and the enhancement of the teaching and learning environment in the schools.

The College of Education extends its appreciation to all members of the review teams for their expertise, experience, and willingness to give their time to this important review process. We look forward to the professional interactions in the days to come.
