Leadership Minor
The University of Wisconsin - Whitewater has a unique opportunity in which the Leadership and Military Science Department offers a leadership minor. There are over 275 host ROTC universities across the nation, with many additional sub-universities that offer ROTC, however, very few of those institutions offer a leadership minor. What does this mean? If you were to attend an institution, that does not offer a leadership minor, and are interested in ROTC, you would have to take general education, major, minor and additional ROTC classes. At UW-Whitewater, that is not the case. Since we have a credited leadership program, you would only be required to take you major, general education, and ROTC classes. The ROTC classes would count towards a minor; meaning you would have to take less classes. This gives our Leadership students the opportunity to focus more on their studies, making them more competitive on the national order of merit list (OML) and thus more likely to branch into the career path of their choice! Army Commissioning Programs
The academic pursuit of a commission as an officer in the United States Army is accomplished simultaneously as students meet the prerequisites for a degree in the discipline of their choice either undergraduate or graduate. The Army ROTC offers a progressive leadership education program that combines challenging academic study and practical training experiences in the theories, concepts and principles of leadership. Additional emphasis is also placed on organizational dynamics, resource management and ethical decision making. The completion of this departmental program prepares the college student to receive a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard.
Qualified enlisted personnel currently serving in the US Army National Guard or US Army Reserve are eligible to participate in the ROTC Officer Training program through the Simultaneous Membership Program while enrolled in the University as full-time students. Students serve in their assigned Army unit as an Officer Trainee and gain practical leadership experience leading Soldiers in a real world environment. Students may also take advantage of the financial and education benefits offered by the Army National Guard and Army Reserve.
