"The MSE-PD program at UW-Whitewater provided me with a unique combination of classroom learning, group projects and real-world experience. Classes are hands-on and projects make you stretch beyond what you thought you were capable of. With real-world situations and assignments, resume-building is easy and your attributes as an employee are fostered right in the classroom.
In addition to the traditional classroom setting, I had the opportunity to get exposed to successful internship opportunities during my time as a graduate student gaining experience in multiple college athletics departments. It was these experiences where I developed a true passion to work in the industry of college athletics. The faculty recognizes the importance of students gaining first-hand experience in their field by providing one-on-one meetings with each student to discuss their aspirations and potential internship opportunities. They truly want each student in the program to be in position to find a job in the student's area of interest immediately following graduation, and in so many cases, they have been successful in doing so.
In my current role serving as a Development Officer at a NCAA Division I institution, I continue to draw on the lessons and experiences I had in the MSE-PD program on a daily basis. Most importantly, it taught me to be comprehensive. Being comprehensive is such a critical skill in so many fields and is especially crucial when working in the industry of intercollegiate athletics. The experiences provided in the classroom also allowed me to develop confidence in myself and critical thinking skills as a result of numerous presentations, group meetings and internships.
Ultimately, the MSE-PD program at UW-Whitewater provided me with the knowledge, skills and support I needed to turn my passion for sports into a successful career."
