About the BassFest
On Saturday, January 17, 2009, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will host its sixth annual BassFest from 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. at the Light Recital Hall in the Center of the Arts Building. This event is a fun and exciting way to learn more about the bass. Bassists and bass enthusiasts of all ages are welcome from beginners through collegiate level.
BassFest 2009 will feature technique classes of varying ability levels, classical master classes, jazz master class and discussions/classes on varying aspects of double bass playing. The day will culminate with a recital featuring the Bass Ensemble made up of the day’s participants and teachers.
Vince Jesse from the Double Bass Workshop in Madison will be on hand to do small repairs (new string installation, sound post/bridge adjustments, end pend work, etc.). Vince will also have new and used basses as well as bass accessories available for sale.
Skill Levels
Classes will be held and participants will be placed accordingly based on level of ability (i.e. middle/high school or college, adult-amateur, adult-teacher or adult-professional).

Faculty
Bradley Townsend
Bradley Townsend holds a Masters of Music Degree in Improvisation from the University of Michigan and a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Diana Gannett. Since graduating from Michigan in 2005, Brad has been teaching both jazz and classical double bass. In addition to his private bass studio in the Madison area, he has also been teaching music at UW- Platteville since 2005. Brad is also an avid jazz and classical performer. In addition to playing with many notable touring artists, he has played with the Rountree Ensemble, the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. His most recent honors include an invitation to perform at the Spark Festival of Electronic Music in the Twin Cities and a feature in Jazziz magazine of his University of Michigan jazz trio. He is currently performing as a member of a number of musical ensembles including Cashew, Executive Tea Set, and Arp of the Covenant, whose first CD was recently reviewed on All About Jazz.
Diana Gannett
Diana Gannett is currently Professor of Double Bass and Chair of the String Area at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Previous appointments include the faculties of Yale University School of Music and the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut, the Oberlin College Conservatory in Ohio and the University of Iowa where as President for the International Society of Bassists, she hosted the 1999 ISB convention.
As a native Iowan, she did her undergraduate training with Eldon Obrecht of the University of Iowa, where she earned her baccalaureate degree. While still an undergraduate, she summered at the Aspen Music Festival studying with Stuart Sankey. Her graduate time was spent with virtuoso Gary Karr at Yale. While at Yale, she earned both a Masters and Doctorate in Musical Arts, the first Yale doctorate awarded in double bass. She co-taught with Karr for many years at Hartt and Yale.
As a chamber musician she has performed with the artists of the Guarneri, Emerson, Laurentian, Stradivari, Maia, Calligiano and Stanford Quartets and the Borodin Trio. Her solo appearances have included many contemporary premieres and solo improvisations as well as traditional repertoire. In recent years she performed and taught in Scotland, Taiwan, Poland and Brazil as well as Israel. Her solo CD Ladybass features a mix of genres. Newly released Duetti Dolci with bassist David Murray features opera duos on double bass. Another duo CD and two solo CDs are in the works.

- Bring friends and family to the concert.
- Wear something bright for the concert.
- Bring a bag lunch or bring money to purchase lunch. Resaurants are within walking distance.
Attention Master Class Participants!
Students of any ability level are welcome to perform a solo piece during the master class at 2:15 with Diana Gannet. Students that wish to play should bring solo music they know or are currently working on. There will be a sign-up sheet when you arrive.
