Forensics Workshop July 27 - August 1, 2008


About the Workshop

This specialized workshop is for students interested in forensics who have completed either the 9th, 10th, or 11th grades and are interested in developing an event for the 2008-2009 high school forensics competition.

Participants may choose and concentrate on one forensics event and through intensive individualized coaching and classroom experiences will:

  • research and write speeches
  • practice interpreting literature
  • learn the art of effective delivery

Choose from one of the following events:

  • Special Occasion Speaking

  • Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Solo Acting

Classroom instruction each participant will receive:

Expectations

  • classroom lectures and activities by qualified instructors
  • individualized coaching from college theatre and forensics students
  • planned social activities
  • preparation of a competitive forensics event for use in high school tournaments and festivals
  • a cooperative, educational, non-competitive atmosphere

If you are a returning participant, you may want to sign up for an area of instruction that you did not take last year or at least plan to prepare a different event than you did last year so you can broaden your forensics experience and knowledge.


Workshop Fee

The fee for the workshop is $360 and includes meals, housing, accident insurance, t-shirt and instructional costs.


Housing

Housing for the workshop participants is provided in a university residence hall convenient to workshop session facilities and dining services. Housing is two persons to a room in single beds. Workshoppers will provide their own linens. The residence hall will be supervised by camp counselors and workshop staff.


Workshop Personnel

Director

Shauna Wessely is a 2006 graduate of UW-Whitewater. She is a Spanish teacher and assistant forensics coach at Milton High School. During her college career, she competed on the Forensics Team at UW-Whitewater and held the positions of Member Liaison and President. She also served as a judge and assistant forensics coach for the University's team. During her high school years, Shauna competed in the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association and then became a certified adjudicator for that organization in 2003. Additionally, Shauna attended UW-Whitewater's Forensics Workshop as a high school student, and served as a counselor for four years.


Assistant Director

Jessie Clements is a 2005 graduate of UW-Whitewater. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication with an emphasis in theory and research. Jessie also earned a theatre minor, and is currently pursuing a degree in Business Management. Jessie was first involved in forensics at the collegiate level when she joined the team in 2004. Since that time, she served as the team's secretary, became a certified Wisconsin High School Forensics Association adjudicator, and won numerous accolades for her collegiate forensics performances.


Staff

Veteran members of the UW-Whitewater Forensics Team will provide individual coaching for each student
