Fall Horn Festival 2012
November 10
About The Festival
"The sky is the ultimate art gallery just above us."
– Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) the American essayist, poet, and philosopher, was just one of a multitude of writers, artists, and composers who have, for hundreds of years, taken inspiration from the heavens. The art of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh often featured the night sky, stars, or a crescent moon. His painting “Starry Night” is one of the most recognizable in the world. There are dozens of astronomical references in Shakespeare’s works, and thousands of poems and musical compositions about the sun, the moon, and the stars.
Come and join us for an Out-of-This-World experience on Saturday, November 10, 2012, when The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Fall Horn Festival presents: THE INTERGALACTIC HORN. We’ll be playing music from Gustav Holst’s thrilling orchestral suite “The Planets.” Additional music includes some of the “stars” of galactic melodies.
YOU WILL GREATLY ENHANCE YOUR ENJOYMENT OF THE DAY IF YOU LISTEN TO A RECORDING OF “THE PLANETS” BEFORE THE FESTIVAL.
This event will be held in the Greenhill Center of the Arts (11/10/12) on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm. The festival is for French horn players in grades 5 – 12, and adult hornists: horn teachers, band directors who would like to brush up their horn skills, and folks who yearn to play horn again - dust off that horn and come join the fun! Registrants will participate in both large and small horn ensembles. The event will conclude with a concert, presented by the festival faculty and participants. We encourage family and friends to attend!
The $35.00 fee covers instruction, materials, and the festival t-shirt.

Linda Kimball
The exciting musical life of UW-Whitewater’s faculty hornist Linda Kimball includes playing principal horn of both the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and performing with the Whitewater Brass Quintet and the Wingra Woodwind Quintet. In her spare time, Linda has performed chamber and orchestral music in Austria, France, Scotland, and Sweden. She was the 2012 guest artist at the SCMEA (Suffolk County, Long Island, NY) “Day of Horn” – (the horn festival that holds the Guinness Book of Records for World’s Largest Horn Ensemble!) where several of her arrangements for horn ensemble were performed. Disney World’s Space Mountain and Mission to Mars rides are probably as close as Linda will ever get to space flight.
Ricardo Almeida
Ricardo Almeida’s interest in space precedes his interest in horn by a good decade when he saw a parade in his home town of Havana, Cuba, which featured Laika and Yuri Gagarin, the first dog and first man in space, respectively. He studied with John Barrows and Doug Hill at UW Madison before moving to Europe to finish his studies in Amsterdam, where he explored new and fascinating worlds, some of them of a musical nature. His professional life took him to Germany where he played in the Cologne Opera Orchestra for 24 years and eventually returned to the US in 2006 to work as a freelance hornist, medical interpreter, cattle man, and star gazer. Many consider him to be on an orbit all his own.
Rebecca Boehm Shaffer
Rebecca Boehm Shaffer is a Wisconsin native who currently is professor of horn at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. At Luther she teaches all things horn, and performs with the Luther College Faculty Brass. Previously she taught at the University of Wyoming and performed with the Fort Collins and Cheyenne Symphonies as well as the Greeley Philharmonic, the University of Wyoming Brass Quintet, the Northern Wind Quintet and the Rocky Mountain Horn Ensemble. Rebecca has lived in Wisconsin, New York City, Southern California, Utah, Las Vegas, Nevada and Colorado teaching and playing the horn. She holds a DMA in Horn Performance and Pedagogy with a secondary emphasis in Music History. She is the author of The Guide to Horn Ensemble Repertoire. She has never wanted to be an astronaut because she is afraid of heights.
Michael Szczys
Michael Szczys received his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Northern Colorado, and his Master of Music degree at the University of Minnesota. While in Minnesota, Michael was a member of the Duluth Symphony and played with the Minnesota opera. He now lives in Madison where he is a member of both the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and maintains a private horn studio. When not involved in horn activities, Mike builds cool things in his basement.
Christine Zacher
Christine Zacher is a director of bands and jazz ensembles in the Northport-East Northport School District on Long Island, New York. Her music department has been nationally recognized as one of the “100 Best Communities for Music Education” for the past ten years. As a hornist, Chris has performed with numerous Long Island orchestras and chamber groups. Originally from Wisconsin, Chris received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the Lawrence Conservatory of Music where she spent hundreds of hours playing horn quartets with Linda Kimball. Chris earned her Master’s degree from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, New York. Thankfully Christine’s annual orbit includes a stop at the UW-Whitewater Fall Horn Festival!
