Fall Horn Festival 2011
November 5
About The Festival
The Horn, with it’s beautiful sound, has been a favorite of composers of orchestral, wind ensemble and chamber music for hundreds of years. But did you know that the sound of the horn also intrigued jazz legend Miles Davis? Did you know that a number of jazz “big bands” have regularly used a French horn section? Do you know Julius Watkins - America’s first jazz hornist?
Join us on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2011, for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater FALL HORN FESTIVAL when we’ll take a “jazztastic” look at this less popular and more mysterious side of the horn. Let’s explore the rhythms and harmonies of jazz and play some excellent jazz-inspired music for horn.
This event will be held in the Greenhill Center of the Arts on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus from 9:30 am - 5:30pm. The festival is for French horn players in grades 5 - 12 and adult hornists. Registrants will participate in both large and small horn ensembles. The event will conclude with a concert presented by the festival faculty and participants. We encourage family and friends to attend!
The $35.00 fee covers instruction, materials, and the festival t-shirt.
Chamber Music Opportunity
- Here is a great opportunity for those who are able to organize a horn chamber group at your school.:
- Choose and rehearse an appropriate piece for your group (your band director can help you with this).
- Attend the Fall Horn Festival as a group and receive a special coaching session for your ensemble.
- Your group may be chosen to perform on the Festival Finale! (suggested ensembles: horn trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, or octet)
Adult Horn Ensemble
Why should the kids get all the fun? Adults like to play horn too! This is an ensemble for adults who are actively playing horn or those who need some inspiration to get back at playing after time off the horn. If you are a band director who plays horn or a private horn instructor, this group is for you. It’s a great opportunity to connect with players of similar interests and abilities. You might even find the right personnel to form your own horn chamber group. As an added bonus, you will have the opportunity to inspire 100 young hornists and show them how to make music part of the rest of their lives!
