About The Class
Designed specifically for Adults, High School and College Students, this course is designed to provide an overview of amateur astronomy and visual observing of the night sky. Using multi-media presentations and class-provided materials, attendees will be able to identify bright stars, constellations, planets, deep sky objects and explain astronomical terms. This course is an excellent primer for teachers, scouts earning their Astronomy Merit Badge or anyone with a general interest in astronomy. Also UW-Whitewater students who are enrolled in introductory Astronomy courses would find this class to be an invaluable asset to their studies.
This course is taught in five weekly 1–1½ hour sessions. Weather-permitting, informal observing sessions will be held after each class.
About The Instructor
Steve Diesso is an avid amateur astronomer and current president of the Milwaukee Astronomical Society. He has conducted many public observing sessions and enjoys informing the general public about astronomy. Steve also is involved in astronomical research including variable star observing, and asteroid rotation rates. Recently he aided the physics department by travelling to the Kitt Peak National Observatory to gather data on open star clusters. This data was used by physics students to determine the distances to these clusters.
