Science Detectives Camp 2013
About the Camp
Join us this summer for the first Annual Science Detectives Camp on the beautiful UW-Whitewater campus. Our camp provides an opportunity for campers to receive an educational experience learning from some of Whitewater’s most dynamic science professors. It is a great way for campers to create memories, while studying side by side with other students who have an interest in science.
Junior Science Detectives Camp (Grades 3-5)
Day 1 - August 12 (8:30a.m.-4:00p.m.)
Chemistry
Water bottles, grocery bags, hair, diapers, and slime, oh my! What do all these have in common? They are all made out of polymers. Explore
the different polymer molecules and conduct experiments to change the properties of the molecules! Faculty: Dr. Jessica Menke
Physics
We all know that drums, hands clapping, and pins dropping make different noises. Find out why as you investigate the world of sound waves,
amplitude, frequency, wavelength, speed, and wave type! Faculty: Dr. Juliana Constantinescu
Day 2 - August 13 (8:30a.m.-4:00p.m.)
Geography
Get swept up in this session where students will determine if it will be windy, stormy with a chance of tornadoes, snowy, or sunny by exploring
the world of weather forecasting. Faculty: Dr. John Frye
Biology
Why does my face turn red when I run? Why do I feel tired after climbing the stairs? Answer these questions and more while working
through hands-on activities to investigate the human cardiovascular system in a safe, non-invasive environment. Faculty: Dr. Peter Mesner
and Teresa Golembiewski.
Please note: this session will involve moderate physical activity.
Day 3 - August 14: Topic of Choice! (8:30a.m.-4:00p.m.)
Have a subject you would love to learn more about? Spend the day exploring the topics in more detail and become an official Junior Science Detective in your favorite subject! Rank your child’s topic choice on the registration panel as (1) for most preferred to (4) for least preferred between Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics. Assignment for your child’s chosen topic is on a first-come, first-serve basis and space for all topics is limited to keep group sizes small.

Science Detectives Camp (Grades 6-8)
Day 1 - August 12 (8:30a.m.-4:00p.m.)
Geography
Join us on a GPS scavenger hunt to learn more about global positioning system technology and how it’s helping us better understand the world
around us. Then, investigate geographic information system (GIS) tools to make maps and see how GIS can analyze patterns in crime, biodiversity,
and renewable energy. Faculty: Dr. Eric Compas and Alvin Rentsch
Biology
What do small cell phones, stain resistant pants, and treating cancer all have in common? They all use nanotechnology! Explore how frogs
develop from a single cell into a tadpole and discover how nanoparticles can affect the complex events in their life cycle. Then, create your
own fluorescent labeled nanoparticles and test them out! Faculty: Dr. Kris Curran and Dr. Eric Brown
Day 2 - August 13 (8:30a.m.-4:00p.m.)
Chemistry
Join in on this explosive session to find out what controls how fast a chemical reaction occurs! Discover how the rate of chemical reactions
can affect materials we use everyday. Faculty: Dr. Paul House
Physics
In this illuminating session, explore why incandescent bulbs, fluorescent bulbs, LEDs, and lasers emit different types of light by making a
device to identify lights based on their character and explore ways to record light patterns. Then, dive into color as you find out how colors
can be combined to create new colors that are used in lights and paints! Faculty: Dr. Steven Sahyun

Fees and Information
Registration Fee: $130
Registration fee includes lunches, camp shirt and lab notebook.
