The Institute
This institute is specifically designed for general education teachers, special education teachers and other school professionals who currently co-teach or who plan to co-teach as part of their school’s inclusion practice. Topics for discussion include:
- Including co-teaching in a teacher’s hectic schedule
- Avoiding potential pitfalls that may occur with co-teachers at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels
- Planning processes for effective co-teaching: The "Dos and Don’ts of Co-teaching"
- Collaboratively modifying instruction, assessment, and standards so that all students can be successful
- Techniques to utilize the strengths of both professional educators in co-taught classrooms
- Research supported co-teaching strategies that positively impact student learning
- Co-teaching as it relates to Response to Intervention (RTI)
- Creatively compensating co-teachers for planning time
Who Should Attend
The Institute provides a three-part professional development program for:
- Teachers; general and special education, early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary levels
- Administrators
- Related Service Providers including speech and language clinicians, occupations and physical therapists, interveners, social workers, etc.
- School Psychologists
- School Counselors
- Curriculum Specialists
- Other professionals who co-train, co-teach, or facilitate school reform
Registration Options
Non-Credit
- Complete the registration form provided on the back of this brochure and return to the address listed, OR register online: camps.uww.edu
- Credit cards accepted for non-credit registration only
- For non-credit registration, the cost of materials is included in the continuing education fee of $200
- When two participants or more who plan to co-teach are enrolled from the same school each participant in the group will receive a 25% ($50) discount
Graduate Course Credit
- Students registering for credit may register for all or part of the institute series (Institute Only (1 credit), Pre-Institute & Institute (2 credits), or Pre-Institute, Institute, & Post-Institute (3 credits))
- Students who are currently enrolled at UW-Whitewater for the Summer 2010 Session may register on the WINS System, OR
- Students who are not currently enrolled at UW-Whitewater should contact the Office of Graduate Study calling 1-800-621-5376 to request an Admission/Registration Packet.

Dr. Wendy Murawski, co-teacher and faculty at California State University, Northridge leads the 2010 Summer Institute. Participants who take the Institute for one course credit will be required to complete an assignment applying Institute content within their professional settings. Participants may register for only the Institute.
Pre-Institute
August 2-3 • 9:00-4:00 • (8:30 registration & materials)
The Pre-Institute will combine in-class discussion and web enhancement facilitated by UW-Whitewater faculty in special education to examine selected literature and research related to the topic. Participants taking the Pre-Institute for one credit are required to complete additional readings, engage in extended discussion, and complete an assignment related to Pre-Institute content. Participants must also register for the Institute.
Post-Institute
August 6-7 • 9:00-4:00 • (8:30 registration & materials)
The Post-Institute will focus on site-based collaborative actions planned to improve practices within schools and districts. Participants taking the Post-Institute for one credit are required to design and submit their own action plans and carry out web enhanced activities with seminar participants and faculty. Participants must attend the Pre-Institute and Institute to enroll in this workshop.

The Speaker
Dr. Wendy Murawki
Dr. Murawski had a successful co-teaching experience in her first year of teaching, and she has been an advocate ever since. A nationally known speaker, she presents at schools, districts, and training seminars about her classroom experiences and research. Dr. Murawski was the 2004 recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Educator Award for California. She is an Associate Professor at California State University, Northridge, where she is Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Special Education and the Chair of the Mild-Moderate Disabilities Specialization. She has published numerous articles and books in the area of co-teaching, collaboration, and teacher training, including "Collaborative Teaching in Secondary Schools: Making the Co-teaching Marriage Work" and a similarly titled book for elementary school co-teachers. The Division of Research of the Council for Exceptional Children has presented Dr. Murawski with the Early Careers Publication Award for her research article entitled "A meta-analysis of co-teaching research: Where are the data?" In addition to her teaching and publication activities, Dr. Murawski serves as the Director of Research for the CHIME Institute, an institute devoted to the inclusion of individuals with disabilities and is co-creator of CTSS (Co-teaching Solution Systems) software. Dr. Murawski uses humor, research, and personal experiences to ensure that her seminars are teacher-friendly and provide "use-tomorrow" practical strategies!
Insurance
Each camper will be covered by a group accident insurance policy. The cost of insurance is included in the registration fee. The insurance includes primary coverage up to $1,000, secondary coverage up to $5,000, and $300 maximum dental insurance. (Insurance does not cover pre-existing injuries and is for accidents only.) Every precaution will be taken to prevent accidents. The Warhawk Football Camps will have a camp health supervisor available.
