Summer Piano Institute - July 6-11 2008
For over 20 years, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Summer Piano Institute has offered young pianists a special opportunity to sharpen their skills, and broaden their musical understanding in an intensive 6-day program. Teaching staff includes UW-Whitewater faculty and internationally known pianists. This program culminates in both solo and ensemble performance opportunities for every student. Students will take part in a variety of activities with others who share their interests, providing a memorable musical and personal experience. All costs are included in the tuition fee.

Academic Faculty
Dr. Myung-Hee Chung, Director of the Summer Piano Institute, is a Professor of Music at UW-Whitewater and an internationally-known pianist. A graduate of the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, Dr. Chung is a first prize winner of many international piano competitions, including the 1977 William Kapell International Piano Competition. She has presented solo recitals internationally and has appeared as concerto soloist with both the Chicago Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony. Dr. Chung has been equally active in ensemble performances, which include playing with the Whitewater Trio. She has a wealth of experience in teaching college students and young children. Before joining UW-Whitewater, she taught at Missouri Southern State College and the University of New Mexico. Dr. Chung will present a recital at the Institute on Sunday, July 6.
Karen Boe, a Minnesota native, was a William Petschek Scholarship student and teaching fellow in piano at the Juilliard School where she received her Master and Bachelor of Music degrees. While completing her doctoral degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Howard Karp, she also served as a member of the piano faculty. Recently, she joined the piano faculty of UW-Whitewater. Her previous teachers include William Masselos, Leonard Shure, Sophia Rosoff and Aube Tzerko. Ms. Boe has performed extensively, with concert performances in Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard Theatre in New York, the Villa Terrace Museum in Milwaukee, guest recitals at Northwestern University, Luther College, Illinois-Wesleyan College, and Oberlin College, and numerous concerts in Spain and France.
Benjamin Whitcomb is an Associate Professor of Music Theory/Cello at UW-Whitewater. He frequently performs solo and chamber music recitals including Whitewater Trio with Dr. Chung and Mrs. Carmen Wiest, and has played with many symphony orchestras. Dr. Whitcomb teaches cello, music theory and string methods among other courses. He has presented papers at the national meeting of the Society of Music Theory and as part of the Music Theory and Composition Forum at the University of Texas, Austin.
Daniel Lyons holds a doctoral degree in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters and Bachelor degree in Piano Performance from DePaul University. His teachers include Dmitry Paperno, Howard Karp and Mary Sauer. He has performed in recitals throughout the Midwest and has appeared as a soloist with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, DePaul Symphony Orchestra, and the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra. While pursuing his doctoral degree, he also founded and established Madison Academy of Music, location of one of the most successful Kindermusik programs in the country. He currently lives in Madison with his wife, Monica, and his children, Kenny, Tatiana and Alexander.
Sarah Read-Gehrenbeck, a native of Dallas, holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance with a minor in Russian Language and Literature from Boston University, where she was in demand as a collborative pianist. While in Boston, she began her organ studies under the direction of Peter Sykes. She earned her Master of Music in Organ Performance at Indiana University, where she taught as an Associate Instructor of Piano, before becoming the Associated Instructor of Organ. While in Bloomington, she frequently performed with colleagues at Indiana University's Early Music Institute, where she studied harpsichord and continuo playing. From 2003-2006 she was Church Music Intern to Chancellor's Professor Dr. Marilyn Keiser, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington. While at Trinity, she served as assistant organist and music director, and founded a very successful children's choir. Currently, Gehrenbeck is Organist and Choirmaster at First United Methodist Church in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and adjunct Instructor of Piano at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She maintains a private studio in Whitewater, and is nearing completion of her Doctor of Music in Organ Performance at Indiana University.
Eligibility
High school students (including graduating seniors) and junior high students may apply. The Summer Piano Institute enrollment is limited to 60 students, and applications will be processed in the order received. Please return the application form and accompanying materials as soon as possible.
Housing Arrangements
Piano Institute students will be housed in a University residence hall. Each room has two single beds. Institute staff will assign rooms based on age and gender. Residence hall designation and a map will be mailed to registered campers 2-3 weeks before the start of camp.
Meal Arrangements
Meals will be served in a University dining center. There will be a welcoming picnic on Sunday evening and a final banquet on Thursday evening.
Repertoire to Prepare
All prospective students are encouraged to bring three pieces for study: one thoroughly perfected, one in the refining stage, and one that is new or "rough."
Deadlines and Fees
Application Deadline June 29, 2008Resident Camper: $420
The camp fee includes daily instructions, meals, and housing in a university residence hall. Also covered are admission to all Piano Institute events and use of campus recreational facilities (including indoor swimming pool).
Commuter Camper: $325 includes noon meals and dinners
A deposit fee of $75 must accompany each application. Final payment may be made any time prior to the start of the institute or at registration on the first day. Except for documented emergency situations, institute deposits will not be refunded. Students who are not accepted into the program will be refunded.
Scholarships
The Summer Piano Institute does not offer scholarships. Students often receive scholarships from such local sources as music-parent and piano-teachers' organizations. Ask your teacher about scholarship opportunities in your area.
