Framework for Understanding Poverty

Summer Institute Series August 2-3, 2006

This institute is built around Dr. Ruby Payne’s groundbreaking work about how individuals from poverty think and act differently than those people in the middle and upper economic classes. It is designed for educators of all stripes, but helpful to anyone who works with students or adults from poverty and will put into words what many veteran educators have experienced in their schools. The institute will cover key points in understanding poverty including case studies, registers of language, story structures, hidden rules, discipline interventions, and building relationships. The institute will also go into depth on the Structures of Learning: The What, The Why, The How and include examination of mental models; vocabulary, math, and reading strategies; lesson design; and question-making as a means to develop cognition in learners.

Participants will be provided a handout packet and asked to purchase a book and workbook for the institute. The total cost of materials is included in the Institute fee.

Speaker

Raised in generational poverty herself, Dr. Cathy Hamilton speaks from her head and her heart about the research on poverty as it impacts student achievement. She is formally trained in Dr. Ruby Payne’s research and provides a massive array of strategies for closing the achievement gap while still honoring the culture that a child owns. Dr. Hamilton has spent the majority of her professional career in the public school arena, 19 years in the language arts classroom and 14 years in administrative positions. She is known for her work around differentiated instruction as it impacts at-risk learners, particularly children carrying special education labels. Cathy also serves as an adjunct professor for Miami University and is currently the Director of the Ohio Principals’ Center in SW Ohio, and lead instructor of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium.
