About The Camp
UW-Whitewater will be hosting two concurrent string camps this year, a Junior Camp (grades 7-8) and a Senior Camp (grades 9-12). Activities for the two camps, except for recitals, will be held separately.
Students at the UW-W String Camps experience an intense and exciting week of immersion in string playing and musicianship. The concentrated musical instruction is tempered with supervised recreational activities in an atmosphere conducive to total learning, fun, and individual growth.
Resident camp fees include room and board along with three meals daily. The commuter costs cover lunch and dinner only. The UW-Whitewater String Orchestra Camps are open to all students who will enter grades 7 through 12 in the fall of 2013. High school graduates who have graduated in June 2013 are also eligible to attend.
- Large ensemble performances
- Faculty and staff recitals of solo and chamber music
- Honors Recitals
- A wide variety of music class offerings:
- String Seminar (includes topics like stage fright and good practice habits
- Beginning Piano
- “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Composing in Garageband (ie: Composing at the computer)
- Recreation: bowling, swimming, dancing, picnics, and games
All resident campers are housed in residence hall facilities on the UW-Whitewater campus. Adult counselors, in attendance at the residence hall, will organize and supervise student activities. While roommate requests are honored whenever possible, developing new friends by having a new roommate is encouraged.
The UW-W String Orchestra Camp and the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater will hold all students responsible for their own conduct. Serious misconduct will lead to immediate dismissal from the camp. Students dismissed from the camp will not receive a refund.
On the first day of camp, campers who did not submit a video by March 1 will play a short audition consisting of scales, sight reading, and a solo of their choice. This audition will determine your orchestra placement and seating, so practice and prepare accordingly. The UW-Whitewater String Camps always draw many highly skilled young players, which makes the highest positions very challenging to earn. However, regardless of placement, all students get to play great music in an orchestra with their peers.
This year private lessons are no longer available. If you are considering majoring in music, contact the professor for your instrument to set up a free lesson during the week of camp. Instead, we will be expanding our Chamber Music opportunities!
Benjamin Whitcomb, Camp Director and Cello
