Theatre Camp Features - July 27- August 2

  • Improve your theatre skills during an enjoyable, dynamic, intense week of instruction and training.
  • Theatre professionals will focus workshops on individualized activity and involvement.
  • The enrollment of this camp is limited to 50-60 high school students in order to maximize the opportunities for individualized attention.

The Theatre Camp is designed for students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2008.


Acting

  • Learn to make your voice work for you.
  • Learn how to be calm, yet dynamic, in audition situations.
  • Develop your body as an instrument through body work, flexibility, and adaptability exercises.
  • Through script analysis, learn how to pace scenes, getting to the right place at the right dramatic moment.
  • Develop the ability to work successfully in ensemble situations.
  • Through improvisation, learn to explore your imagination.
  • Through self-exploration, become more aware of how you look, think, feel, imagine, move, talk, etc.
  • Work on a scene to be presented at the end of the week.

Design and Technical Theatre

  • Learn the important elements in costume and scene design.
  • Learn how to light a set dramatically.
  • Work on a computerized light board.
  • Assist in preparing scenes to be presented at the end of the week.
  • Develop stage management skills.

Sponsorship

Many times high school drama clubs, civic organizations and local art groups will sponsor participants to camps such as this. Sponsorships are generally offered in the form of awards to students who have demonstrated an interest in theatre through their participation in high school and community theatre events.

Camp Director

Sceneboard

Dr. Charles Grover, originator and director of the 7-Day, Theatre Camp, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre/Dance at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. A teacher of directing, acting, movement, and voice, Dr. Grover also directs several plays each year, teaches theatre history and dramatic literature, and supervises student teachers preparing to enter secondary teaching in theatre. Recent productions he has directed are Guys and Dolls, Once Upon a Mattress and Pirates of Penzance. Dr. Grover received the 2004 Outstanding Theatre Educator Award from the Wisconsin Alliance for Theatre Education.


Technical Director

Stephen Chené is the Technical Director for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Department of Theatre/Dance and has designed sets and lights for various productions for the University. Previous credits include Technical Director and/or Lighting Designer at Bucknell University, Gainesville College, Madison Savoyards, Tecumseh!, Nebraska Theatre Caravan, and Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble.

Fees

The $405 fee for the 7-Day Theatre Camp includes instructional and operational costs, room and board, meals, insurance, camp t-shirt and banquet.


Registration

Submit the attached application by July 14, 2008. A $75 non-refundable deposit must accompany your application. Balance is due at check-in.

Your application must be accompanied by a letter of reference from your theatre teacher (or another teacher with whom you have worked closely), the school counselor, or the principal.


Meals & Housing

Residence halls are within walking distance of the Center of the Arts. Campers will be housed two to a room and must supply their own linens. The food centers are located adjacent to the residence hall serving three well-balanced meals each day.
