Wheelchair Basketball Camp June 14-19

The UW-Whitewater Junior Warhawk Wheelchair Basketball Camp is in its twelfth year of providing quality instruction, focusing exclusively on developing basketball skills.

Athletes planning on attending this camp should be extremely independent and have a strong interest in competitive basketball. Athletes will participate in a variety of stations focusing on both individual and team concepts, and will be instructed by some of the best wheelchair basketball players in the world.

Campers should be prepared for at least seven hours of basketball per day and able to take care of themselves in a university setting. Participation will be limited to 75 athletes.

This camp will offer the participant/athlete opportunities to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally through participation in a variety of sporting activities through instruction with peers and camp staff.

Special emphasis will be placed on developing the skills of self-esteem and self-determination. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend a week on a totally accessible campus, experiencing university life and gaining the experience of being away from home. All campers are under the supervision of a professional and highly trained staff.

The overarching goal of this camp is to offer participants the opportunity to have fun, gain greater awareness of their abilities, and build their independence and self-confidence.

Who Should Attend?

Boys and girls, ages eight to 18, who have a mobility impairment as their primary disability, are eligible to attend. All levels of mobility are encouraged. Individuals should have a willingness and ability to try several sports using adaptive equipment and rules. Our prerequisite is a good mental attitude.

What To Bring

Several weeks before the start of camp, participants will receive detailed instructions about what to bring and where to report.

Housing

The residence hall, where camp participants will stay, is completely accessible, fully supervised, and located close to all campus activities. Rooms are double occupancy. Restroom and shower facilities are available.

Facilities

The UW-W Junior Warhawk Wheelchair Basketball Camp will be conducted on the picturesque campus of the Unversity of Wisconsin-Whitewater, situated in Wisconsin's scenic Kettle Moraine region. The UW-Whitewater campus, part of the 26-campus UW System, is the model campus for accessibility.

All facilities, including gymnasiums, tennis courts, track, and University Fitness Center, are completely accessible. Our facilities feature the latest in Nautilus strength training equipment and aerobic training machines. All areas are accessible and checked well in advance to verify their appropriateness.

Camp Staff

Camp Director Tracy Chynoweth will be assisted by instructional staff who have extensive experience in Wheelchair Athletics and Recreation. Each individual staff member instructs in the area of their specialty and a majority of the camp counselors are students from the University who have physical disabilities or have experience working with disabled youth. The extensive involvement of University students with disabilities provides an excellent opportunity to expose young athletes to positive role models who can contribute to their personal growth.

Director of Instruction Jeremy Lade is a 2004 graduate of UW-Whitewater who led the Warhawks to National Championships in 2003 and 2004 before going on to lead the Milwaukee Wheelchair Bucks. Lade has also played on the U.S. National Team since 2001 and was the Head Coach of the 2007 Junior National Champion Wheelin' Wizards.

Director of Operations Dave Huss is a student at UW-Whitewater who has worked in adaptive athletics in several capacities for the last three years. He has experience working with the National Champion Warhawks, with several programs on campus, and has been exposed to wheelchair basketball at the international level.
