Activities which may be included are basketball, tennis, water skiing, go-carts, sledge hockey, football, floor hockey, and martial arts. Participants should be completely independent in all activities of daily living, have a positive mental attitude, and a willingness to participate in a variety of activities. Participation is limited to 15 participants.
Who Should Attend?
Boys and girls, ages 8-18, who have a mobility impairment as their primary disability, are eligible to attend. All levels of mobility are encouraged. Individuals should have awillingness and ability to try several sports using adaptive equipment and rules. Our one prerequisite is a good mental attitude.
UW-Whitewater Facilities
The Wheelchair Camps will be conducted on the picturesque campus of UW-Whitewater, situated in Wisconsin’s scenic Kettle Moraine region. The UW-Whitewater campus, part of the 26-campus UW System, is the model campus for accessibility. All facilities, including gymnasiums, tennis courts, track, and University Fitness Center, are completely accessible. Our facilities feature the latest in Nautilus strength training equipment and aerobic training machines. All areas are accessible and checked well in advance to verify their appropriateness.
The UW-Whitewater will offer the participant-athlete opportunities to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally through participation in a variety of sporting activities and through instruction with peers and the camp staff. Special emphasis will be placed on developing the skills of self-esteem and self-determination. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend a week on a totally accessible campus, experiencing university life and gaining the experience of being away from home. All campers are under the supervision of a professional and highly-trained staff. The over-arching goal of these camps is to offer participants an opportunity to have fun, gain greater awareness of their abilities, and build their independence and self-confidence.
Housing
The residence hall, where camp participants will stay, is completely accessible, fully supervised, and located close to all campus activities. Rooms are double occupancy.Restroom and shower facilities are accessible.
Attendant Care
If you are not totally independent for personal hygiene and all activities of daily living, you will need attendant care services. You may arrange these through a local home health agency. The two agencies that serve the current student population at UW-Whitewater are Society's Assets (800-261-8181) and Lutheran Social Services (262-473-2864) .
Camp Staff
The Camp Director is Tracy Chynoweth. Tracy will be assisted by instructional staff who have extensive experience in Wheelchair Athletics and Recreation, including Assistant Director Tom Colwell. Each individual staff instructs in their area of specialty. The counselors are students from the University who have physical disabilities or have experience working with disabled youth. The extensive involvement of the students with disabilities provides an excellent opportunity to expose the young athletes to positive role models that can contribute to the campers' personal growth.
Insurance
Each camper will be covered by a limited
accident insurance policy. The insurance
includes primary coverage up to $1,000,
secondary coverage up to $5,000 and $300 maximum in dental insurance. Insurance does not cover pre-existing injuries and is for
accidents only. The cost of insurance is included
in the registration fee. Every precaution will be taken to prevent accidents. Our camp will have a camp health supervisor available.
Camp Fees
The cost is $425 for all campers attending the Junior Warhawk Wheelchair Basketball Camp and $600 for the Junior Warhawk Wheelchair Sports Camp. These fees include room, board, instructional costs, insurance, camp clothing and administrative costs.
