Course Description:

This online course is designed for educators in a K-12 setting who are currently teaching, designing or wanting to obtain additional information to facilitate an online learning environment. Over the course of the three weeks, we will be looking into three main components of a virtual classroom. One will be the learning community as a whole, the second will be teaching and learning in a virtual community and the third will be focusing on course design. This workshop would assist teachers in meeting Wisconsin state mandates for required professional development and fulfilling the 30-hour online training required prior to teaching online courses within a school district.

The course will be designed through readings, discussions, exploring course management systems (CMS) and group collaboration. Weill be using the book, Building Online Communities: Effective Strategies for the Virtual Classroom by Rene M. Palloff and Keith Pratt which maybe be purchased through Amazon or other online book retailers.

  • Part One: Learning Community
Focus will be on the introductions to a virtual learning community, creating a social presence, understanding student differences, issues with technology at a tool, roles of the facilitator and student both in online and hybrid.
  • Part Two: Teaching and Learning in a Virtual Community
Majority of the week will be spent on this section. The focus will be splint into three main components: one-building foundations; two-promoting collaborative learning; three-Course assessments and evaluations. We will be highlighting topics of transformative learning and communication between facilitator-to-student; student-to-student; and facilitator-to- community.
  • Part Three: Course Design
Participants will design a course using a course management system (e.g. Moodle, Edmodo, Desire2Learn, or Blackboard) highlighting the nine standards of Quality Matters. Participants will use a variety of technology tools to enhance their curriculum. Students will be on campus for two days working with individuals with expertise in Quality Matters, podcasting, screencasting, and assessment strategies.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Apply various theories of course design models to an e-learning environment
  • Examine various learning styles and learn how to assist with diverse needs of students
  • Create assessment tools relevant to an e-learning environment
  • Develop strategies to communicate and collaborate with student-to student, facilitator-to-student, and community-to-facilitator-to-student within the online environment
