Online Teaching Workshop
July 30 – August 12, 2012
Course Description:
This online course is designed for educators in a K-12 setting who are currently teaching, designing or wanting to obtain additional information to facilitate an online learning environment. Over the course of the week, we will be looking into two main components of a virtual classroom. One will be the learning community as a whole and the second will be teaching and learning in a virtual community. This workshop would assist teachers in meeting Wisconsin state mandates for required professional development and fulfilling the 30-hour online training required prior to teaching online courses within a school district.
The course will be designed through readings, discussions, exploring course management systems (CMS) and group collaboration. We will be using the book Building Online Learning Communities: Effective Strategies for the Virtual Classroom by Rena M. Palloff and Keith Pratt which maybe purchased through Amazon or other online book retailers.
- Part One: Learning Community
Focus will be on the introductions to a virtual learning community, creating a social presence, understanding student differences, issues with technology as a tool, roles of the facilitator and student in both online and hybrid courses. - Part Two: Teaching and Learning in a Virtual Community
The majority of the week will be spent on this section. The focus will be split into three main components: Building Foundations, Promoting Collaborative Learning, and Course Assessments and Evaluations. We will be highlighting topics of transformative learning and communication between facilitator-to-student, student-to-student, and facilitator-to-community.
