Compressed Video

Two-way Audio and Video

A digital compressed videoconferencing system offering live two-way interactive audio/video is available to use for credit and non-credit courses, meetings, etc. UW-Whitewater is part of a compressed video network which was established by UW-Extension for the four-year campuses in 1995 . This network now offers connectivity with UW Colleges, technical colleges, K- 12 schools and other off-net sites as well. Compressed video is a powerful telecommunications tool which is used to transmit live video and audio signals simultaneously over special high-capacity ISDN lines and more recently over the internet (IP).

The UW-Whitewater distance education classroom is equipped with the following: ( 1 ) A document camera which allows users to transmit slides, transparencies, hard copies, and three-dimensional objects; ( 2 ) A VCR/DVD player; ( 3 ) A PC that can be used for web browsing, PowerPoint presentations, software demonstrations, etc. The featured technology is a Polycom VS 4000 videoconferencing system capable of sending or receiving video over IP or ISDN. This system can also integrate audio-only interaction over standard telephone lines when video is not possible.
