Scotland
Melrose Area/Scottish Borders

MELROSE is a peaceful small town in the Scottish Borders area, located amidst a landscape of rolling hills, moors, wooded river valleys and farmland, stretching one hour south of Edinburgh. This is the land of Sir Walter Scott with Abbotsford as its center. Only a mile’s walk out of Melrose, the Eidon Hills are fascinating for Botanists, Ornithologists, Geologist and Archeologists. The Melrose Abbey is where King Robert the Bruce’s heart is said to be buried.
Scotland's educational system has traditionally been viewed as one of the finest in the world. Immersion into this system will enable teachers to discover many instructional methods that can be adapted to their own classroom.
For approximately the first two weeks of the program, U.S. teachers will be placed on an individual basis with host teachers in classrooms in Scotland while at the same time staying as guests in their hosts' homes. Our goal is to match our teachers with hosts based on grade level or content area; however, placements are subject to availability and perfect matches cannot be guaranteed. It is the school and home experience that make this program unique - professional and personal experiences with people in their culture.
During third week (seminar week) of the program, teachers will meet a conference facility in Edinburgh to share their classroom/fieldwork observations, participate in a group writing project, and visit local authorities and nearby schools.
During the fourth and final week, teachers will explore the history, culture, and diversity of Scotland or beyond on an independent basis or in small groups. The expenses during this period of time are not covered in the cost of the program. The intent of this travel week is to provide opportunities to explore, investigate, and enhance experiences in international settings. These experiences allow travel flexibility within or beyond the British Isles. The program officially ends at noon on Friday, July 4.
Cost: $2,950* Fee includes six graduate credits, four on-campus seminars with lunch, placement fees to in-country liaisons, room and board in host homes, educational seminars and room and board at a facility in the Edinburgh area during Seminar Week, and UW System emergency insurance coverage (CISI). Expenses during the week of individual or small group travel are not included. * Please note that we have not included roundtrip airfare in the cost of the trip. This will allow for greater flexibility for individual travelers and could result in lower airfare costs. A travel agent familiar with our program who specializes in this part of the world will be invited to make a presentation at the first and/or second pre-fieldwork seminar and to offer assistance in making these arrangements.
