Summer 2008 Study Tours
Australia, New Zealand, or Scotland: Comparative Education & Overseas Fieldwork
Dates: June 7 - July 4, 2008.
This four-week program is designed for experienced K-12 teachers who are interested in exploring classroom practices through direct observation and hands-on activities in one of three English-speaking countries. Individual teachers will be placed for approximately two weeks with a host teacher in the country of their choice. This school/home placement will be followed by one week of independent study/travel and a week of seminars with the other members of the group. Participants will also be required to attend three Saturday pre-fieldwork seminars on the UW-Whitewater campus during spring semester and one post-fieldwork seminar in October. Natural History of North Carolina Outer Banks & Middle Appalachian Mountains
Dates: May 22 - June 9, 2008.
This 19-day field experience and travel study course to the Middle Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and Duke University Marine Biology Laboratory on the Outer Banks of North Carolina will include fieldwork in the study of invertebrate zoology, ecology, geology and natural history. Participants will gain an understanding of the complexity of organisms and their inter-relatedness by observing them in their national setting and examine marine ecosystems. Natural History of Yellowstone National Park & Upper Great Plains
Dates: August 4-22, 2008
This 19-day field experience and travel study course to South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming will give educators and teachers-in-training an opportunity to learn how to conduct ecological research, gain an appreciation of present-day ecosystems, interpret the events in the earth’s history that shaped the various study sites, and use equipment such as global positioning systems receivers. Participants will return with a wealth of classroom materials including slides and photos, minerals and fossils. (3 credits; Department of Biology or Department of Geography/Geology).
